The second light rail attack involved a suspect identified in federal records as Oscar Gerardo Solorzano-Garcia (listed as Oscar Solarzano in state court). According to an FBI affidavit, he is from Central America and had been deported twice since 2018 after being convicted of illegal reentry into the United States.
Both suspects remain in custody. Brown has been ordered to undergo psychiatric examinations in both federal and state court to determine his competency to stand trial. His legal representatives have declined to comment or did not respond to inquiries.
The December stabbing occurred shortly after federal immigration authorities conducted a major enforcement operation in Charlotte and other parts of North Carolina that resulted in hundreds of arrests. Republicans have long criticized Sheriff McFadden, who faces a Democratic primary next month, for allegedly failing to cooperate with immigration agents.
