Noem to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee Amid Immigration Controversy
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has agreed to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on March 4, Chairman Jim Jordan confirmed exclusively to Fox News Digital. The appearance marks Noem’s second congressional testimony commitment, as she is also scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 3.
Jordan emphasized that Noem’s appearance is part of routine oversight of Cabinet officials under his committee’s jurisdiction. He specifically noted that the hearing was not prompted by committee Democrats’ recent demands for Noem to answer questions about two controversial killings of U.S. citizens during immigration operations in Minnesota.
“This is routine oversight,” Jordan told Fox News Digital in a brief interview, distancing the planned hearing from the recent controversy.
The hearing comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies, which have sparked hundreds of court challenges to arrests and detentions of suspected undocumented immigrants across the country.
Jordan indicated that one of his primary focuses during the hearing will be on so-called sanctuary jurisdictions – cities and states that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
“You’ve got a guy in your jail who’s done some bad thing — that’s why he’s in your jail — and, oh, also happens to be here illegally, and you’re not going to work with ICE,” Jordan said. “I think the vast majority of the country thinks that’s just stupid. So I think that’s a point we have to stress.”
The hearing takes place against the backdrop of controversy surrounding the deaths of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were killed by immigration authorities during operations in Minnesota. Noem initially described both victims as “domestic terrorists,” a characterization that drew significant backlash even from within Republican circles.
The FBI is currently investigating both incidents to determine whether agents legally employed lethal force. Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, led by Ranking Member Jamie Raskin of Maryland, have accused Noem of making premature statements that amount to a “cover-up” for her department’s actions.
The controversy prompted a significant reshuffling of immigration operations in Minnesota. President Donald Trump removed regional immigration enforcement leader Greg Bovino and dispatched White House border czar Tom Homan to take control of the situation. Homan has publicly vowed to remain in Minnesota “until the problem’s gone.”
Trump has stood firmly behind Noem throughout the controversy, recently defending her on his Truth Social platform. The president accused “Radical Left Lunatics” of targeting Noem “because she is a woman, and has done a really GREAT JOB!”
The twin hearings in March will likely place intense scrutiny on the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration enforcement practices, particularly in light of the Minnesota incidents. The appearances also come as the administration continues to defend its immigration policies in multiple court challenges nationwide.
Immigration has remained a cornerstone of Trump’s second administration, with aggressive enforcement actions continuing to generate both strong support from his base and fierce criticism from opponents, particularly in so-called sanctuary jurisdictions where local officials have resisted federal immigration operations.
As Noem prepares for her congressional testimonies, the administration’s immigration policies face critical examination from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with potentially significant implications for the future direction of enforcement operations.
