New Mexico Lawmakers Launch Investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s Ranch Activities

State legislators in New Mexico have initiated an investigation into past activities at the secluded desert ranch once owned by financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, focusing on potential sexual abuse and whether local authorities ignored criminal behavior.

The bipartisan, four-member panel of state House representatives aims to uncover whether the ranch facilitated sexual abuse and sex trafficking. Lawmakers are also questioning why Epstein wasn’t registered as a sex offender in New Mexico after his 2008 guilty plea to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl in Florida, raising concerns about possible corruption among public officials.

Democratic state Rep. Marianna Anaya of Albuquerque, a member of the newly formed truth commission, urged people with information about abuse at the ranch to come forward.

“That perpetrator could not act alone. They could not run a sex ring alone, they could not commit these types of financial crimes alone,” Anaya stated during a Tuesday news conference. “So we know as a commission that enablers must also be held accountable, including the state itself, if needed.”

Epstein purchased the sprawling Zorro Ranch in 1993 from former Democratic Gov. Bruce King. The property, located about 35 miles south of Santa Fe, featured a 26,700-square-foot hilltop mansion and a private runway, creating an isolated compound far from public view.

The ranch was sold by Epstein’s estate in 2023, with proceeds directed toward creditors. The new owners are the family of Don Huffines, a Republican candidate for Texas state comptroller. Huffines announced on social media that the property has been renamed San Rafael Ranch after a saint associated with healing, with plans to operate a Christian retreat there. He has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement requests for access.

Commission chairwoman and state Rep. Andrea Romero of Santa Fe noted that several survivors of Epstein’s abuse have indicated that sex trafficking activities extended to the New Mexico ranch.

“We’ve heard years of allegations and rumors about Epstein’s activities here. But unfortunately, federal investigations have failed to put together an official record,” Romero said. “This truth commission will finally fill in the gaps of what we need to know.”

The commission includes retired FBI agent and Republican state Rep. William Hall of Aztec and former district attorney and Rep. Andrea Reeb of Clovis. State House legislators voted unanimously on Monday to establish the commission with subpoena power and a budget exceeding $2 million.

The investigation comes amid renewed scrutiny of high-profile figures connected to Epstein. Recent revelations of ties to the disgraced financier have led to the departure or ousting of several prominent individuals across various sectors.

Though Epstein never faced charges in New Mexico, the state attorney general’s office confirmed in 2019 that it was investigating and interviewing possible victims who visited the ranch. In 2023, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez ordered an investigation into financial businesses utilized by Epstein, resulting in agreements with two banks that dedicated $17 million toward human trafficking prevention efforts.

Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges that he sexually abused and trafficked dozens of underage girls. His death left many questions unanswered about the full extent of his criminal activities and the network that allegedly enabled them.

The New Mexico investigation represents one of the most substantial state-level efforts to address lingering questions about Epstein’s activities and potential accomplices, focusing specifically on operations at his New Mexico property and whether state authorities failed in their responsibilities to protect potential victims.
