Minnesota’s GOP gubernatorial candidate Patrick Knight has launched a scathing critique of Governor Tim Walz’s administration, claiming the state is “cratering” under Democratic leadership that treats law enforcement as optional rather than mandatory.
“The law is not a buffet table where you just pick and choose which laws you’re going to enforce today and which laws you’re going to ignore,” Knight told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview. “The rule of law matters.”
Knight, a 20-year Marine veteran and former manufacturing CEO, is among nearly a dozen candidates seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Walz. His candidacy emerges as Minnesota grapples with the fallout from a massive fraud scandal involving state programs that has reportedly cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
The fraud crisis, which investigators have linked substantially to Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community, prompted federal immigration enforcement actions that have sparked significant civil unrest. Two anti-ICE activists, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both 37, were killed during separate confrontations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
Knight addressed these deaths with measured caution, stating, “The loss of any life is tragic, and there should be a full and transparent investigation with both the state and the federal government participating and let the facts drive the accountability.”
The gubernatorial hopeful pointed to what he sees as contradictory positions taken by Governor Walz on immigration enforcement. “When Governor Walz testified before Congress, he stated openly that he would, the state would cooperate with ICE. And then, two weeks later, he is at the University of Minnesota Law School graduation where he is calling ICE the ‘modern day Gestapo,'” Knight said.
Such inconsistencies, Knight argues, reflect a broader pattern of Minnesota’s Democratic leadership prioritizing political theater over effective governance. “Minnesota is cratering on the fundamentals. We’re just going on the wrong way on every, not just some, every fundamental. Crime, education, economy, affordability, not to mention good governance,” he explained.
The immigration enforcement tensions in Minnesota mirror a national debate that has intensified during the Biden administration. When federal, state, and local authorities cooperate on immigration matters, Knight suggests, operations proceed smoothly. “When the federal government, in a reasonable manner, enforces immigration law and the city and state cooperate, that’s when it works. It’s when egos get involved and political theatrics get involved where it spins out of control.”
Knight’s campaign platform centers around what he jokingly calls a “big, beautiful, basic, boring” five-point plan focusing on the economy, affordability, education, rule of law, and building a smaller, more efficient state government. This approach reflects his belief that Minnesota needs to move away from political drama and return to fundamental governance principles.
The candidate’s military background includes service as both a judge advocate and an infantry officer deployed to the Middle East. He retired in 2006 as a lieutenant colonel before entering the private sector as a manufacturing executive.
Minnesota’s fraud scandal and subsequent immigration enforcement actions have placed the state at the center of national attention. The situation has reportedly prompted communication between former President Donald Trump and Governor Walz, with Trump reportedly urging Minnesota to “work together peacefully” with ICE.
Knight’s critique of the Walz administration comes as Minnesota voters increasingly express concern about rising crime rates, economic challenges, and educational outcomes. Public polling has shown growing discontent with the state’s direction despite its traditionally Democratic-leaning electorate.
“It’s a cultural issue that needs to be changed and it starts at the top,” Knight concluded. “I say it’s a simple fix. Get a strong, competent governor.”

The rule of law is an important principle, but the details and context matter greatly here. I hope the state can work to uphold the law while also addressing the complex social and economic factors involved. A pragmatic, evidence-based approach seems warranted.
This is an important issue that deserves thoughtful debate. While there are valid concerns around the rule of law, we must also consider the nuances of immigration policy and the impact on local communities. A balanced approach that upholds the law while respecting human rights is ideal.
