A Border Patrol shooting in Minneapolis on Saturday has intensified tensions between federal and local authorities, with Attorney General Pam Bondi criticizing Minnesota leadership for policies she claims contributed to the incident.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, a Border Patrol agent fatally shot an armed individual during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. The operation was aimed at apprehending an undocumented immigrant wanted for violent assault when an individual allegedly approached officers carrying a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino stated that agents attempted to disarm the person, who “violently resisted.” Bovino explained that an agent then fired “defensive shots” out of fear for his life and the safety of fellow officers. The individual, who was carrying two loaded magazines and no accessible identification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting quickly sparked protests in the area, requiring crowd-control measures as demonstrators gathered around the location. Authorities noted the investigation into both the shooting and subsequent unrest remains ongoing.

In an interview with Fox News, Bondi placed blame for the incident on Minnesota’s political leaders, specifically targeting Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

“This has happened in Minneapolis because you have a mayor and a governor who have declared Minneapolis a sanctuary city,” Bondi said. “You’re invited here. We will protect you.”

Bondi asserted that ICE agents operating in Minneapolis have been arresting individuals accused or convicted of serious crimes, framing the enforcement actions as necessary public safety measures. “And that’s why Donald Trump has ICE in Minneapolis, to protect the citizens,” she added.

The Attorney General characterized the protests following the shooting as “extremely organized,” noting protesters had matching signs and gas masks. “The signs they have are all matching. They’re well written. How did these people go out and get gas masks?” she questioned.

During the interview, Bondi confirmed that federal grand jury subpoenas had been issued to Governor Walz, Attorney General Ellison, and Mayor Frey, though she declined to elaborate, saying only, “That’s all I can say right now legally.”

Bondi also revealed she had sent a letter to Governor Walz warning that the federal government would intervene if state leaders failed to support federal law enforcement efforts. “We sent Governor Walz a very strong letter today… saying that he better support President Trump. He better support the men and women in law enforcement because if he doesn’t, we are, and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

The incident occurs amid growing tensions between federal immigration authorities and so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions across the country. Such policies generally limit local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, which supporters say encourages community trust in law enforcement among immigrant populations, while critics argue they undermine public safety and federal law.

Bondi indicated that multiple federal agencies are currently assisting DHS as the situation develops in Minneapolis, emphasizing that the administration’s priority remains protecting law enforcement officers and the public.

“We’re going to support our great men and women in law enforcement,” she stated.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened national focus on immigration enforcement policies, with the Trump administration intensifying operations targeting undocumented immigrants across the country, particularly those with criminal records.

Federal authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while local officials have yet to provide detailed public responses to Bondi’s accusations.
