In the face of fierce opposition and protests, Department of Homeland Security agents continue their immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, arresting numerous individuals with serious criminal records as part of “Operation Metro Surge.”

DHS officials announced this week that despite challenges from protesters and lack of cooperation from local authorities, they have apprehended several undocumented immigrants with extensive criminal histories, including those convicted of domestic assault, fraud, drug trafficking, and violent crimes.

Among those arrested was Teng Houa Vang, an undocumented immigrant from Thailand, who has been convicted of domestic assault and pleaded guilty to making terroristic threats and violating a protection order. According to DHS, Vang’s criminal record also includes charges of arson, voyeurism, obstruction of police, trespassing, assault, drug possession, and property damage.

Nigerian national Michael Opeoluwa Egbele was taken into custody Tuesday on fraud and impersonation convictions, while Francisco Salazar-Solorzano from El Salvador was arrested the same day with charges of assault, domestic violence, and driving under the influence.

Three additional arrests included Victor Javier Bahena-Sandoval and Santiago Antunes Mendiola from Mexico, as well as Spanish national Lorenzo Armillas Llaurado. Bahena-Sandoval’s record includes domestic violence and multiple disorderly conduct convictions, while Mendiola has been charged with battery, and Llaurado was convicted of felony distribution of controlled substances.

The operation continues amid heightened tensions following the fatal shooting of activist Renee Nicole Good, which has intensified anti-ICE sentiment in the city. Protesters have staged demonstrations against federal immigration enforcement activities, with some confrontations resulting in the deployment of tear gas.

In a statement released Wednesday, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that the agency’s focus remains on “the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.” She criticized Democratic Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for what she characterized as sanctuary policies that hamper federal immigration enforcement efforts.

“Governor Walz and Mayor Frey refuse to let us into their jails and instead chose to release criminal illegal aliens back into Minnesota neighborhoods to victimize more Americans,” McLaughlin said. “Despite violence against them and a lack of cooperation from sanctuary politicians, our law enforcement will not stop their efforts to get criminals out of our country.”

The ongoing operation highlights the growing tensions between federal immigration enforcement priorities and local sanctuary policies in cities across the United States. Minneapolis has become a flashpoint in this national debate, with local officials frequently opposing federal immigration operations within their jurisdiction.

Immigration enforcement has been particularly contentious in Minneapolis, with ICE agents reporting hostile encounters while conducting operations. Videos have circulated of protesters confronting agents at various locations, including restaurants and businesses in immigrant neighborhoods.

Critics of the operations argue that aggressive immigration enforcement creates fear in immigrant communities and discourages cooperation with local law enforcement on other matters. Supporters maintain that targeting individuals with serious criminal histories is necessary for public safety.

The standoff between federal immigration authorities and Minneapolis officials reflects a broader national divide over immigration enforcement priorities. As Operation Metro Surge continues, both sides appear entrenched in their positions, with DHS vowing to maintain its presence despite local resistance.

Neither Governor Walz nor Mayor Frey responded to requests for comment on the recent arrests or DHS statements regarding their policies.
