Texas Democrat Menefee Vows More Effective Trump Impeachment Efforts Than Predecessor

Democratic Rep. Christian Menefee of Texas has pledged to continue impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump, following in the footsteps of Rep. Al Green, but with a different approach focused on building broader party support and achieving results.

“I’m the candidate in this race who has a track record of standing up for my community, of fighting back and doing so effectively in a way that gets things done,” Menefee told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. While continuing the impeachment push, he emphasized his strategy would differ significantly from Green’s previous unsuccessful attempts.

Menefee, who won a special election in January to fill the seat of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, is now locked in a heated primary contest against Green for Texas’s 18th Congressional District. The two Democrats found themselves competing for the same seat after Republican redistricting plans in Texas threatened to eliminate as many as five Democrat-held seats, prompting Green to announce his intention to run in the 18th District.

Though Menefee avoided directly criticizing Green’s past impeachment efforts, he made it clear his approach would be more pragmatic. “My approach is going to be, when I file articles of impeachment, my goal is for them to either pass or to get very close to passing,” Menefee explained. “That means collaborating with the other members of the Democratic caucus to make sure that it’s going to be effective.”

Green’s most recent impeachment attempt in December garnered support from 140 Democrats, but 23 voted with Republicans to kill the measure, while 47 voted present. None of Green’s multiple impeachment efforts have successfully cleared the House.

“My goal in filing impeachment articles is going to be to impeach the President of the United States, no other goal,” Menefee stated, distancing himself from what some view as Green’s symbolic gestures.

The 20-year congressional veteran Green has made opposition to Trump his defining characteristic in recent years. He gained national attention after being ejected from Trump’s State of the Union addresses in both 2025 and 2026—first for refusing to take his seat while waving his cane at the president, and more recently for bringing a sign with the phrase “black people aren’t apes.”

Green has framed his impeachment attempts as a litmus test for fellow Democrats, stating last November, “We have to participate. This is a participatory democracy. The impeachment requires the hands and the guidance of all of us.”

Progressive groups have praised Green’s willingness to challenge Trump. Dave Mytych from For Liberation and Resistance Everywhere (FLARE) called Green’s efforts what “the American people want,” adding, “They want fighters that hold the line.”

The primary contest between Menefee and Green represents a broader tension within the Democratic Party between those who prioritize making symbolic stands against Trump and those who favor a more coalition-building approach aimed at achieving tangible results.

Menefee positions himself in the latter camp, emphasizing pragmatism and effectiveness. “If I’m spending time on it, it’s because I’m trying to get something done,” he said, contrasting his results-oriented philosophy with what some see as Green’s more performative style.

The political landscape in Texas has been further complicated by Republican redistricting efforts, which have forced Democrats like Green and Menefee into direct competition. This redistricting strategy aims to consolidate Republican power in the state by eliminating Democratic-leaning districts.

With neither candidate securing a majority in the initial Texas primary elections earlier this month, Green and Menefee will face off in a runoff election scheduled for May 26, which will ultimately decide who represents the party in this historically Democratic district.

The race highlights the ongoing debate within the Democratic Party about the most effective tactics for opposing Trump as they navigate challenging electoral maps across several key states heading into future elections.
