In a contentious Maryland school board meeting, a student-led conservative group has become the center of controversy after hosting an event that one community member claims prompted a Child Protective Services report.
The dispute emerged during a February 12 board meeting when a local woman identified only as “Nancy” expressed “serious concerns” about a December event organized by the Calvert County Club America (CCCA), which is affiliated with the conservative activist organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA).
Before Nancy spoke, the 17-year-old president of the CCCA addressed allegations against his group, stating they had implemented restrictions for the December event after facing online criticism. These measures included limiting adult attendance to known volunteers and parents of participating students.
“We have been accused of many things. We have been accused of grooming children… an allegation that a random unnamed man was president of our group and had certain felony charges,” the student said, defending his organization. “I’m the president of the group. I’m 17, I’m a minor. I can’t groom children because I am a child. I don’t have any felony charges or convictions.”
The student also emphasized that the CCCA operates as its own 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with TPUSA but is separate from the Maryland public school system, and that all students attending the event had parental permission.
Nancy, however, painted a different picture of the situation. She claimed that parents and legal guardians were barred from the event, creating what she described as “a lack of transparency” that “undermines established best practices for youth safety.” She argued that such events should require proper supervision and background checks.
“Students are widely recognized as a vulnerable population, they are in critical developmental stages, and especially susceptible to influence,” Nancy told the board before revealing that a report had been filed with Child Protective Services regarding the circumstances of the event.
“All Board of Education members in this room are mandated reporters under state law, as I am. Based on the circumstances surrounding this event, a report was made to Child Protective Services,” she concluded.
The Maryland controversy comes during a period of growth and heightened attention for TPUSA following the assassination of its founder, Charlie Kirk, last September. Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University while hosting one of his signature “Prove Me Wrong” debates, where he fielded open-mic questions from attendees.
Since the assassination, TPUSA has continued its expansion efforts on high school and college campuses across the country. Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow, has publicly vowed that the organization will maintain its presence on campuses despite the tragedy.
“We are not afraid,” Erika Kirk told Fox News in December, affirming that TPUSA would continue hosting debate-style events as part of its outreach strategy.
TPUSA has grown into one of the most prominent conservative youth organizations in the United States, known for its campus activism and events designed to appeal to younger conservatives. The organization has attracted both strong support from conservative circles and criticism from opponents who question its tactics and messaging.
The Calvert County incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding political activism in educational settings, especially when organizations with defined political leanings seek to engage with students in public school environments. School districts nationwide increasingly find themselves navigating complex questions about where to draw boundaries between student expression, outside political influence, and school responsibilities.
Neither the school board nor Child Protective Services has publicly commented on the status of any investigation related to the December event.
