Four Dead in Washington Stabbing Spree as Suspect Awaited Restraining Order Service

A violent attack unfolded Tuesday morning in Washington state’s Key Peninsula when a 32-year-old man fatally stabbed four people outside a home northwest of Tacoma, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. The assailant was subsequently shot and killed by a responding deputy.

The tragic sequence of events began around 8:40 a.m. when deputies received reports that the suspect was violating a no-contact order. Upon investigating, officers determined the existing order wasn’t legally enforceable because it had never been formally served to the man. Deputies were en route to deliver the protection order when emergency calls reported multiple stabbings at approximately 9:30 a.m.

A deputy arrived within three minutes and encountered the suspect in the midst of the attack. The officer discharged their weapon, fatally wounding the assailant, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.

Three victims died at the location, while a fourth succumbed to injuries during transport to a hospital. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or their relationship to the attacker.

Court records reveal that a woman living at the address had obtained a one-year protection order against her son last May. In her filing, she described him as having significant mental health and substance abuse issues. She detailed how he had previously pushed her and made threatening statements, including telling her that her “grave has been already dug up.”

The elderly woman, who identified herself as disabled in court documents, wrote that her son had been “threatening me, abusing me both mentally and emotionally. Doing witchcraft/occult behavior and doing rituals in my home.” She further alleged he damaged her belongings and harmed her cat, adding, “I am an elderly disabled woman and he is taking advantage of me and my health.”

Although court records indicate the son had been notified about the hearing for the restraining order, he failed to attend. The subsequently issued protective order prohibited him from possessing dangerous weapons and required him to maintain at least 1,000 feet of distance from his mother, her vehicle, and their previously shared residence. The order also mandated compliance with a prescribed mental health treatment plan, including medication.

The circumstances surrounding the failure to serve the protection order remain unclear. In Washington state, those granted such orders typically have several options for service, including requesting law enforcement delivery, hiring a private investigator, or employing a professional process server. Service can be delayed when the subject’s location is unknown.

The violence shocked the normally quiet Key Peninsula community. Local resident Chris Cardenas, who lives minutes from the crime scene, described hearing gunshots while washing his truck in his driveway.

“All of a sudden I just heard like a series of gunshots,” Cardenas recounted. “You could really hear it echoing through the trees.” He described a flurry of emergency response activity, with sirens blaring continuously for about 40 minutes.

Curiosity drew Cardenas to the cordoned-off area, where he observed a massive emergency response including ambulances, a forensics bus, and dozens of police vehicles. “I immediately knew something was up because I’ve never heard gunshots out here,” he said, adding that he couldn’t have prepared himself “for how tragic the news would be.”

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in domestic violence prevention and mental health intervention. Washington state has seen multiple efforts to strengthen protection order enforcement in recent years, though gaps in the system persist. The case also underscores the difficulties families face when dealing with loved ones experiencing mental health crises.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbings and the events leading up to the violence.
