Liberals Strengthen Hold on Wisconsin Supreme Court with Election Victory

Liberals expanded their majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday when Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor defeated conservative Appeals Court Judge Maria Lazar, according to the Associated Press. The victory strengthens liberal control in a key battleground state.

Taylor, a former Democratic state representative, will succeed a retiring conservative justice, expanding the liberal majority on the court to 5-2. The election, while officially non-partisan, follows the trend of increasingly partisan judicial contests in Wisconsin in recent years.

“Tonight the people of Wisconsin stood up for our courts and freedoms, our democracy, our elections and a strong state Supreme Court that will protect the independence of our beloved state,” Taylor told supporters during her victory celebration.

With most votes counted, Taylor held a substantial 19-point margin over her opponent, a larger-than-expected victory that prompted national Democrats to celebrate. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin quickly highlighted the significance of the win in a social media post, noting that Wisconsin voters “sent another big message to Republicans, securing a liberal majority until 2030!”

In her concession speech, Lazar acknowledged the defeat but remained defiant: “The fight is not over and we will keep fighting for our courts because they are that important.”

Unlike last year’s high-profile Wisconsin Supreme Court election that flipped control of the court from conservatives to liberals for the first time in over a decade, this year’s contest received significantly less national attention and outside funding. The 2023 election had drawn enormous resources, including support from billionaire Elon Musk, who headlined rallies while wearing the iconic Green Bay Packers “cheesehead” hat and reportedly distributed $1 million checks to voters.

The stakes in Wisconsin judicial elections remain considerable despite the reduced spotlight this year. Since gaining their majority in 2023, liberal justices have reversed several election-related rulings from the previous conservative-majority court, including a decision that had banned absentee ballot drop boxes—a contentious issue in election administration.

This year’s campaign focused heavily on several critical issues likely to come before the court, including abortion rights, congressional redistricting, and union rights cases. Wisconsin’s position as a crucial swing state in presidential elections adds additional weight to these judicial outcomes, as court decisions can impact election procedures and voting access.

The strengthened liberal majority on the court could have significant implications for Wisconsin’s political landscape ahead of November’s elections. Democrats in the state are aiming not only to maintain control of the governor’s office but also potentially to flip the state legislature, which Republicans have controlled for 15 years.
