Democratic Leadership Silent as Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick Faces 25 Ethics Violations

A bipartisan House Ethics subcommittee has found Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida guilty of over two dozen ethics violations, yet House Democratic leadership has maintained a cautious stance, declining to call for her resignation.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed the situation Friday morning with measured restraint, stating, “The Ethics Committee has one final step in their process, so I’m not going to get out ahead of the Ethics Committee process that will be completed upon our return. And then I’ll have more to say.”

House Democratic Conference Chairman Pete Aguilar of California acknowledged the severity of the situation when informed of the 25 violations, telling Punchbowl News, “that doesn’t sound good,” while indicating he had not yet reviewed the panel’s findings personally.

The violations against Cherfilus-McCormick are extensive and serious, including money laundering, making false statements on campaign finance reports, and seeking special favors from entities receiving federal funding.

Beyond the ethics violations, the Florida representative faces a separate federal criminal indictment that could result in more than 50 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors allege she illegally transferred millions in disaster relief funds from her family’s healthcare company to finance her congressional campaign and purchase luxury items, including an expensive diamond ring. Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty to these charges.

The House Ethics Committee plans to announce its recommended punishment in April. The severity could range from censure to expulsion, with the latter requiring a two-thirds majority vote in the House to remove her from office.

While Democratic leadership remains largely silent, cracks are beginning to appear in the party’s unified front. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a moderate Democrat from Washington, became the first member of her party to publicly call for Cherfilus-McCormick’s departure following the guilty verdict.

“You can’t crime your way into legitimate power,” Gluesenkamp Perez stated bluntly. “Since she was found guilty, she should resign or be removed.”

Several other congressional Democrats have indicated they would consider supporting an expulsion resolution if Cherfilus-McCormick does not resign voluntarily, signaling growing discomfort within the party ranks about the situation.

Despite the mounting pressure, Cherfilus-McCormick shows no signs of stepping down and is even seeking reelection in November’s midterm elections. She released a statement Friday maintaining her innocence: “I look forward to proving my innocence. Until then, my focus remains where it belongs: showing up for the great people of Florida’s 20th District who sent me to Washington to fight for them.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee was quick to criticize Democrats’ measured response. “The Ethics Committee just confirmed that Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick broke the rules, and House Democrats are still saying nothing,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said Friday. “Their silence is a choice. Democrats can stand for accountability or keep protecting a proven ethics violator, but voters won’t forget it.”

The case represents a significant ethical challenge for Democratic leadership, particularly as they head into a contentious election season. How the party handles misconduct allegations within its own ranks could impact voter perception of its commitment to ethics and accountability in government.

The allegations against Cherfilus-McCormick are particularly troubling as they involve the alleged misuse of disaster relief funds intended to help vulnerable communities. Such accusations strike at the heart of public trust in government officials and programs designed to assist those in need.

As Congress returns from recess, all eyes will be on the Ethics Committee’s final recommendations and how Democratic leadership ultimately responds to this growing scandal within their ranks.
