The White House has launched an investigation to identify who leaked sensitive information about a missing American airman after their fighter jet was shot down over Iran on Good Friday, according to a White House official speaking to Fox News Digital.

President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval during a Monday press conference focused on the successful rescue mission, stating that his administration is working “very hard” to identify the source of the leak. Trump emphasized that the unauthorized disclosure significantly increased the danger for both the missing pilot and the rescue teams.

“When they did that, all of a sudden the entire country of Iran knew that there was a pilot that was somewhere on their land that was fighting for his life,” Trump said during the briefing. “And it also made it much more difficult for the pilots and for the people going in to search for him.”

The president outlined a forceful approach to uncovering the source, stating, “We think we’ll be able to find it out because we’re going to go to the media company that released it, and we’re going to say, ‘national security, give it up or go to jail.'”

According to reports, the news first broke through Israeli media channels. The Military Times cited an X post by Israel’s N12 News reporter Amit Segal as the first to report that one crew member had been successfully rescued, attributing the information to a Western source around 11 a.m. on Friday. However, another N12 News reporter, Barak Ravid, had published an article for Axios hours earlier revealing that one pilot was rescued while another remained missing, citing “an Israeli official and a second source with knowledge.”

Following these initial reports, major U.S. news outlets including CBS News, the Washington Post, and Reuters published similar information about the missing airman, though they attributed their reporting to U.S. officials.

The incident has raised serious concerns about operational security during sensitive military operations. The F-15 fighter jet was shot down by Iranian forces, triggering a complex rescue mission in hostile territory. HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters were deployed as part of the rescue efforts in what Trump later described as an “Easter miracle.”

The leak investigation highlights the delicate balance between press freedom and national security concerns, especially during active military operations. The unauthorized disclosure of such sensitive information can not only compromise rescue missions but potentially cost lives.

Trump called the person responsible for the leak “sick” and insisted they would face jail time. “They put this mission at great risk,” Trump said. “They put that man at great risk, and they put the hundreds of people that went in looking for him, because everyone now knows that we’re going in.”

When contacted about the investigation, Amit Segal told the New York Post, “I’m not sure I was the first,” adding, “And anyway — I will protect my sources.” Axios declined to comment when reached by Fox News Digital, while CBS News, the Washington Post, Reuters, and Israel’s Channel 12 had not yet responded to requests for comment.

The incident raises broader questions about information security protocols during military operations and the responsibility of media outlets when reporting on ongoing sensitive missions. The White House investigation is likely to examine not only how the information reached reporters but also whether proper safeguards were in place to prevent such leaks during critical military operations.

The successful rescue of the downed airman, despite the security breach, demonstrated the capabilities of U.S. special operations forces to execute high-risk missions even under compromised circumstances.
