U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested a Cuban national who allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon against federal officers during an attempted arrest in San Antonio. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, highlights a concerning trend of increasing violence against immigration enforcement officers.
Robyn Argote Brooks, who entered the United States in 2024 through the CBP One application program, was confronted by ICE officers during a targeted vehicle stop in a San Antonio parking lot. Video footage of the encounter shows Brooks defying officers’ commands while trapped between ICE vehicles.
In the video, Brooks can be seen suddenly reversing his sedan, narrowly missing an agent and colliding with a federal SUV behind him. After this failed attempt to escape, Brooks accelerated forward, ramming another ICE vehicle before continuing to press on the gas as agents attempted to stop him. The confrontation ended when an agent broke through Brooks’ window and physically removed him from the vehicle to complete the arrest.
According to Department of Homeland Security officials, one officer sustained neck injuries during the incident and required hospital treatment afterward.
Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed concern for the injured officer, stating, “We are praying for him, his health, and his family.” McLaughlin directly attributed the rise in such incidents to politicians who support sanctuary policies, claiming they “have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest” and “created an environment that incites violence against our law enforcement.”
The incident represents part of what DHS describes as an alarming trend. The agency reports that ICE officers have experienced 66 “vehicular attacks” between January 21, 2025, and January 7, 2026, representing a 3,200% increase compared to just two incidents during the same period the previous year. Officials also cited a 1,300% increase in overall assaults against immigration agents.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons addressed the situation on Tuesday, characterizing the challenges faced by federal immigration agents as “constant impediments” and “constant attacks.”
“When we hear elected officials calling upon individuals to impede or obstruct ICE law enforcement operations nationwide, you’re going to see incidents like this,” Lyons said. “You saw the officers and agents attempting to apprehend a criminally illegal alien, and there they are using their car as a weapon.”
The San Antonio incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement operations across the country. DHS officials have expressed growing concern about what they describe as organized attempts to disrupt federal law enforcement activities, with some incidents involving multiple individuals confronting officers during routine operations.
McLaughlin warned that the current administration intends to pursue maximum penalties for anyone attacking law enforcement personnel, stating, “Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Critics of the CBP One app, which Brooks reportedly used to enter the country, claim the program has allowed entry to individuals without sufficient vetting. According to DHS statements, the program has facilitated the entry of “over a million unvetted aliens into the country” since its implementation.
Brooks is currently being held in ICE custody, though details regarding specific charges were not immediately available.
“Every day, this is what the men and women of ICE are facing,” Lyons concluded. “It’s constant impediments, constant attacks like this. And it’s not safe for my folks, it’s not safe for the public. It really needs to stop.”
