Justice Department Releases Millions of Epstein Files Revealing High-Profile Communications
Federal authorities have released a massive trove of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, offering new insights into the late financier’s communications with powerful figures in business, politics, and government. The Justice Department disclosed more than 3 million pages of documents, along with thousands of videos and photos, in compliance with congressional legislation.
By Friday evening, approximately 600,000 documents had been published online, with millions more still awaiting release. The delay in releasing all identified files has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
The documents reveal extensive communications between Epstein and Steve Bannon, who served as a top adviser to former President Donald Trump. In hundreds of text messages exchanged in the months before Epstein’s 2019 death, the pair discussed politics, travel arrangements, and a potential documentary project aimed at rehabilitating Epstein’s public image.
In one March 2019 exchange, Bannon requested use of Epstein’s private aircraft to pick him up in Rome. Months later, Epstein messaged Bannon: “Now you can understand why trump wakes up in the middle of the night sweating when he hears you and I are friends.” The precise context of this remark remains unclear due to heavy redactions in the released files. Bannon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The documents also show Epstein communicating with Kathy Ruemmler, a lawyer who previously served in the Obama administration. In one error-filled email, Epstein advised Democrats against portraying Trump as a Mafia figure while simultaneously describing the former president as a “maniac.” Through a spokesperson, Ruemmler acknowledged her professional association with Epstein during her time in private practice, stating she “regrets ever knowing him.”
Perhaps most notably, the files contain email exchanges between Epstein and Tesla CEO Elon Musk from 2012 and 2013, discussing potential visits to Epstein’s Caribbean island compound—a location central to many allegations of sexual abuse. In one exchange, Epstein inquired about helicopter arrangements, to which Musk reportedly responded that it would likely be “just him and his partner at the time.” Musk also allegedly wrote: “What day/night will be the wildest party on our island?”
The documents don’t clearly establish whether these island visits ever occurred. Musk has previously denied visiting Epstein’s island, stating on social media in 2025 that he “repeatedly turned down the disgraced financier’s overtures” and “REFUSED” invitations to the island. Representatives for Musk’s companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Current Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also appears in the files. Documents show Epstein invited Lutnick to his island in December 2012, an invitation Lutnick’s wife reportedly accepted enthusiastically, noting they would arrive via yacht with their children. The documents indicate Lutnick and Epstein met for drinks in 2011 and later exchanged emails about construction near their respective residences. Lutnick has previously distanced himself from Epstein, describing him as “gross” and claiming to have severed ties decades ago. He did not respond to inquiries regarding these latest revelations.
The document release also provides new information about Epstein’s final days. After his arrest on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell approximately one month later. While multiple investigations have concluded Epstein died by suicide, newly released emails between investigators include observations questioning whether Epstein’s final communication resembled a suicide note.
The files further reveal the elaborate measures taken by jail staff to shield Epstein’s body removal from media scrutiny. Officials created a decoy using boxes and sheets, loading it into a clearly marked medical examiner’s van, which successfully diverted pursuing journalists. Meanwhile, Epstein’s actual remains were transported in an unmarked black vehicle that departed “unnoticed.”
This document release represents one of the most significant disclosures of information related to Epstein’s case since his death. The financier, who had previously served a controversial 13-month sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor in Florida, faced renewed federal charges in 2019 for allegedly trafficking dozens of underage girls for sexual exploitation.
The ongoing release of these documents is expected to continue in the coming weeks, potentially revealing further details about Epstein’s extensive network of relationships with prominent figures across business, politics, and entertainment.
