In a significant shift within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), nearly 50 House Republicans have formally endorsed Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) to lead the agency following Kristi Noem’s removal from the position. The GOP Main Street Caucus, a group representing the more pragmatic wing of House Republicans, issued a rare formal statement backing Mullin’s nomination.
The letter of support, signed by 47 Republican lawmakers and led by Chairman Mike Flood (R-Neb.) and Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.), highlights Mullin’s qualifications for the critical cabinet position.
“Senator Mullin has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to border security. His familiarity with the legislative process and his longstanding support for pro-America policies make him well-suited to lead DHS at this critical moment,” the lawmakers wrote. “We are confident he will bring the focus and discipline necessary to further our shared priorities.”
President Donald Trump announced Mullin as his choice to lead DHS last week, simultaneously removing Noem from her cabinet position. Instead of maintaining her role at DHS, Noem has been appointed to serve as special envoy for a newly created Trump initiative called Shield of the Americas.
Noem’s tenure at DHS had become increasingly controversial, particularly during a contentious immigration operation in Minneapolis that sparked bipartisan calls for restraint. The operation resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens in an incident involving federal agents, leading to widespread protests across the city.
In response to the growing crisis, Trump replaced Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) official Greg Bovino, who had been empowered by Noem, with border czar Tom Homan. The personnel change marked a significant pivot in the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement operations.
The Main Street Caucus letter revealed that more than two dozen lawmakers from the group met with Homan last week to discuss immigration enforcement strategies. The caucus, which includes over 85 House conservatives focused on governance and legislative results, expressed strong support for Homan’s work in strengthening immigration enforcement as White House Border Czar.
A key focus emerging from these discussions is a more targeted approach to immigration enforcement. The lawmakers emphasized that “enforcement efforts should remain focused on the worst criminal offenders,” noting that “prioritizing the removal of individuals who pose the greatest threats to public safety ensures that federal resources are used effectively while protecting American families and communities.”
This strategic shift represents a notable departure from previous immigration operations that drew criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for allegedly targeting undocumented immigrants indiscriminately, including at federal courthouses during routine immigration appointments.
The caucus also called for the repeal of sanctuary jurisdiction policies that they claim “undermine public safety and hinder lawful immigration enforcement.” Additionally, they advocated for giving federal authorities “access to local jails before criminal aliens are released.”
Mullin’s nomination has garnered widespread support among Republicans and even attracted backing from some Democrats, including Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who described Mullin as a “nice upgrade” for the position.
The Main Street Caucus concluded their letter by emphasizing the importance of transparent communication between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and both Congress and the American public regarding deportation successes, particularly concerning individuals with serious criminal records.
As the confirmation process moves forward, Mullin’s nomination represents a significant moment in the administration’s evolving approach to immigration enforcement and homeland security policy, with increasing emphasis on targeted enforcement rather than broad sweeps that had previously generated controversy.

Good point. Addressing the full scope of DHS’s mandate, from cybersecurity to disaster response, will be important. Mullin’s Senate confirmation hearings should shed more light on his broader agenda.
While border security is a major priority, Mullin will need to demonstrate strong leadership and management skills to effectively run the complex DHS bureaucracy. Hopeful he’s up to the challenge.
Mullin’s border security experience could be valuable for DHS, but it remains to be seen if he has the broader management skills needed to lead a large federal agency effectively. Interested to see how his nomination process unfolds.
