Surveillance images released in Trump-Kennedy Center vandalism, authorities seek public’s help in identifying suspect

Federal authorities have launched an investigation into what officials describe as a “targeted attack” on the Trump-Kennedy Center’s outdoor ice rink after surveillance footage captured a suspect pouring a toxic substance across the ice surface.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, forced the cancellation of a scheduled performance at the outdoor venue. Trump-Kennedy Center President and Ambassador Richard Grenell shared surveillance images on social media Saturday, urging the public to help identify the suspect.

“Help us find this terrorist suspect who attacked the Trump Kennedy Center,” Grenell wrote, drawing attention to the suspect’s shoes and umbrella as potentially identifying features.

U.S. Park Police have obtained video footage and recovered what officials described as a toxic chemical container for DNA processing. Investigators are also reviewing cellphone tower data and canvassing nearby cameras, including Metro bus footage that reportedly captured the suspect. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.

Roma Daravi, vice president of public relations for the Trump-Kennedy Center, confirmed the severity of the attack in a statement. “Today, a targeted attack on the Trump Kennedy Center vandalized and destroyed our outdoor arena, causing severe damage that unfortunately forced us to cancel tonight’s performance,” Daravi said. “We are working feverishly to complete repairs so programming can resume tomorrow.”

Officials reported that a brown-black substance was poured across the ice surface, and a gallon-sized container was left behind. While the exact chemical has not been publicly identified, leadership described the substance as “toxic.”

The vandalism comes amid what Grenell characterized as ongoing tensions surrounding the center’s recent name change. In December 2025, the board of trustees voted unanimously to rename the facility “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” with former President Trump later elected chairman of the board.

In a separate social media post, Grenell suggested the attack might be politically motivated. “This is so sad & unnecessary—@TheDemocrats have been calling artists urging them to cancel and attacking the Center non-stop. It’s a calculated campaign,” he wrote, adding that the center has faced “serious death threats and constant harassment.”

The incident has raised security concerns at the prominent cultural venue, which has recently undergone significant changes in leadership and branding. The center, one of Washington D.C.’s most recognizable cultural landmarks, hosts hundreds of performances annually and serves as a major tourist destination.

No suspect has been publicly identified, and authorities have not released information about a potential motive. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.

Cultural institutions with political affiliations have increasingly become targets for vandalism in recent years, prompting many venues to enhance security measures and surveillance systems. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by public venues with political associations in an era of heightened partisan tensions.

Grenell is urging anyone with information to contact U.S. Park Police at 202-416-7900. Authorities have emphasized that violence “will not be tolerated” and those responsible will be held accountable.

The Trump-Kennedy Center is working to repair the damage and resume its scheduled performances as quickly as possible, though the full extent of the damage and the timeline for complete restoration remain unclear.
