Voters Head to Polls for Special Election in Georgia’s 14th District, Mississippi Primaries

Voters in Georgia’s solidly Republican 14th Congressional District are casting ballots today in a closely watched special election to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned in January following a public falling out with President Donald Trump.

The contest in northwest Georgia has drawn national attention as Republicans cling to a razor-thin 218-214 majority in the House of Representatives. For the GOP, maintaining this seat is crucial to preserve their slim control of the chamber. Trump carried the district by a commanding 37-point margin in the 2024 presidential election, making a Democratic upset highly unlikely but still a concern for Republicans.

The special election features a crowded field of 17 candidates, down from 22 who initially filed. Under Georgia’s election rules, all candidates regardless of party appear on the same ballot. If no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote today, the top two finishers will advance to an April 7 runoff.

President Trump has thrown his support behind Clay Fuller, one of 12 Republican candidates vying for the seat. Fuller, the district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, appeared alongside Trump during a campaign stop in Rome, Georgia last month, where Fuller described himself as a “MAGA warrior” to the assembled crowd.

Also in the Republican field is former state Sen. Colton Moore, who has positioned himself as a staunch Trump supporter and has garnered significant backing from the party’s far-right wing.

The Democratic side features three candidates, including retired Army Brigadier General Shaw Harris, who previously ran against Greene in the 2024 general election. Despite the district’s strong Republican leanings, Harris has emerged as the fundraising leader in the race, amassing an impressive $4.3 million – more than any other candidate in the field.

Political analysts suggest that Fuller enters the contest as the favorite, largely due to Trump’s endorsement. However, with the Republican vote potentially split among a dozen candidates, Harris could secure one of the two runoff spots if no candidate crosses the 50 percent threshold in today’s primary.

Meanwhile, 200 miles to the west, Mississippi is holding its own primary elections, though these contests have attracted less national attention. In the Magnolia State, incumbent Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith faces a primary challenge from physician and novelist Sarah Adlakha as she seeks a second full six-year term in the U.S. Senate.

On the House side, Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson – Mississippi’s longest-serving current member of Congress – is facing two primary challengers in his bid for an eighteenth consecutive term. Thompson remains the only Democrat in Mississippi’s congressional delegation.

The special election in Georgia’s 14th District is being closely monitored by both national parties as they position themselves for the 2026 midterm elections. For Republicans, holding this reliably red seat would maintain their narrow House majority and preserve their ability to advance legislative priorities. Democrats, while facing long odds in this particular district, are using the race to test messaging and build infrastructure in a state that has become increasingly competitive in statewide races.

The outcome in Georgia could also serve as an early indicator of Trump’s influence within the Republican Party as he continues to make endorsements in key races across the country. A win by his preferred candidate would reinforce his standing as the party’s kingmaker, while an upset victory by another Republican would raise questions about the limits of his political capital.

Polls in both Georgia and Mississippi close this evening, with results expected to begin rolling in shortly thereafter.
