President Trump announced a leadership change at the Trump Kennedy Center on Friday, with Matt Floca, the current vice president of facilities operations, set to replace Ric Grenell as president. The transition comes as the center prepares to suspend entertainment activities and begin major renovations after the July 4th celebrations.

The formal announcement is expected Monday when the Trump Kennedy Center’s board meets to officially suspend operations and launch construction efforts. According to a source familiar with the situation, the leadership change reflects the center’s new focus on reconstruction rather than performances.

“I have determined that the fastest way to bring the Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of success, beauty and grandeur is to cease entertainment operations for an approximately two-year period of time,” President Trump wrote in a social media post last month, signaling the shift toward renovation.

Grenell, who has served as the center’s president since February of last year while also working as a special envoy, comes from a foreign policy background rather than construction. “The whole thing is turning into a construction zone,” a source close to the matter explained. “It’s going to be a construction zone and [Ric is] not a construction guy.”

In his announcement on Truth Social, Trump praised Grenell’s contributions during the transition period: “Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done.”

The president also expressed confidence in Floca’s ability to oversee the renovation project, noting, “As Vice President of Operations, Matt has helped us achieve tremendous progress in bringing the Center to the highest level of Excellence! A Complete Reconstruction of THE TRUMP KENNEDY CENTER will begin after the July 4th Celebration.”

The ambitious renovation project carries a price tag of $257 million, funds that were approved by Congress in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” last year. The significant investment underscores the administration’s commitment to transforming the cultural landmark.

The Trump Kennedy Center’s transition comes amid other changes in the institution’s programming. The Washington National Opera recently announced its departure from the center, citing financial difficulties. The opera company’s exit aligns with the center’s planned two-year hiatus from entertainment activities.

The Kennedy Center, originally named after President John F. Kennedy and dedicated to the performing arts, has long been a cultural fixture in Washington, D.C. Its location along the Potomac River makes it one of the capital’s most recognizable landmarks. The planned reconstruction represents one of the most significant changes to the institution in recent years.

When asked about his future plans, Grenell declined to comment on what role he might take next. Given his background in foreign policy and previous government service, speculation remains about whether he will return to diplomatic work or take on another position within the Trump administration.

The renovation is expected to modernize facilities while preserving the center’s architectural significance. The project’s completion will likely coincide with the latter half of President Trump’s current term, potentially making it a signature cultural achievement of his administration.
