Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director and Special Counsel, Dies at 81
Former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who led the high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has died at the age of 81, his family announced Saturday.
“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away” on Friday night, the family said in a statement, requesting privacy during this time. While no specific cause of death was disclosed, Mueller had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021, which had significantly affected his mobility and speech in recent years.
Former President Donald Trump responded to the news with sharp criticism on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” The reaction underscores the contentious relationship between Mueller and Trump that defined a significant portion of Trump’s presidency.
Mueller’s career in public service spanned decades, beginning with his service as a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star for valor. He built an extensive career in law enforcement and national security, working as a federal prosecutor and U.S. attorney in San Francisco before taking on senior leadership roles at the Department of Justice.
His appointment as FBI Director came at a pivotal moment in American history – just one week before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Mueller guided the bureau through its transformation into a counterterrorism-focused agency during one of the most challenging periods in its history. His leadership was so valued that President Barack Obama requested he remain in the position beyond the traditional 10-year term, ultimately serving for 12 years until 2013.
However, Mueller became a household name when Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed him as special counsel in May 2017 to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign. The investigation, which lasted nearly two years, cast a shadow over much of Trump’s first term in office.
The Mueller investigation resulted in charges against several Trump associates, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. His final 448-page report, released in April 2019, detailed extensive contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia but did not establish a criminal conspiracy between them.
On the question of obstruction of justice by President Trump, Mueller declined to make a traditional prosecutorial decision, citing longstanding Justice Department policy against indicting a sitting president. This approach drew criticism from both sides of the political spectrum – with Democrats arguing it didn’t go far enough and Republicans claiming it unfairly tarnished the president without charging him.
In recent months, Mueller had largely remained out of the public eye due to his declining health. In September, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer withdrew a subpoena for Mueller to testify in the committee’s Jeffrey Epstein investigation after learning about his health issues.
Throughout his career, Mueller earned a reputation as a nonpartisan public servant committed to the rule of law. Even as his final major public role became entangled in partisan politics, colleagues from across his career have consistently described him as principled and dedicated to justice.
Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann, and their two daughters. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

I agree. His contributions to national security and law enforcement over the decades should be recognized, even by his critics.
Trump’s harsh reaction to Mueller’s death is telling. Their contentious relationship clearly left deep scars. While reasonable people can disagree, such bitterness toward the deceased is unbecoming of a former president.
As a Marine veteran, Mueller demonstrated courage and integrity throughout his career. His passing is a loss for the country, regardless of one’s political affiliation.
