In a striking political role reversal, more than 50 Democratic lawmakers have called for President Donald Trump’s removal from office through the 25th Amendment, citing concerns over his fitness to serve following recent statements regarding Iran. This marks a notable contrast to Democrats’ previous dismissal of similar Republican efforts against former President Joe Biden.

The latest push began after Trump posted on social media that “a whole civilization will die” unless Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, comments Democrats characterized as dangerous and indicative of his unfitness for office.

“I certainly think the president should be removed,” said Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.). “I mean, he’s unfit for office. I think the 25th Amendment, and if not, then impeachment.”

This call for extraordinary action mirrors Republican efforts in 2022, when Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) wrote to then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging him and Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment against President Biden. “If President Biden is unwilling to resign, for the sake of our great nation, you must do your duty to relieve him of his constitutional powers and duties,” Schmitt wrote at the time.

While most Senate Democrats have remained relatively quiet on Trump’s potential removal, enthusiasm has been more pronounced in the House. House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) has scheduled a caucus-wide briefing on the workings of the 25th Amendment for Friday afternoon, indicating Democratic leadership’s willingness to provide a platform for these discussions.

The political maneuvering highlights Washington’s partisan divide, as the roles from just months ago have essentially flipped. Last summer, Republicans pushed for Biden’s removal after what many considered a disastrous debate performance against Trump and following special counsel Robert Hur’s report questioning Biden’s cognitive abilities.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said then, “There’s a lot of people asking about the 25th Amendment, invoking the 25th Amendment right now, because this is an alarming situation.” Johnson added, “Our adversaries see the weakness in this White House, as we all do. I take no pleasure in saying that. I think this is a very dangerous situation.”

Democrats, who previously dismissed these concerns about Biden, are now leading the charge against Trump. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who didn’t support 25th Amendment proceedings against Biden, has publicly called for Trump’s removal through this mechanism, stating, “Donald Trump’s instability is more clear and dangerous than ever. If the Cabinet is not willing to invoke the 25th Amendment and restore sanity, Republicans must reconvene the Congress to end this war.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has so far stopped short of explicitly calling for Trump’s removal, a notable restraint among Democratic leadership.

The 25th Amendment, which provides a constitutional mechanism for replacing a president deemed unfit for office, would require widespread Republican support to succeed against Trump – support that appears nonexistent in the current political climate. For the amendment to take effect, the vice president and a majority of Cabinet officials would need to declare the president unfit, creating a significant political hurdle.

Trump himself acknowledged the irony of the situation during an April Cabinet meeting, joking that if he revealed his plans regarding Iran, “I wouldn’t be sitting here for long. They’d probably — what is it called? The 25th Amendment — They’d institute the 25th Amendment,” before adding, “Which they didn’t do with Biden, which is shocking.”

The evolving situation underscores how calls for a president’s removal often reflect partisan calculations rather than consistent constitutional principles, with each party’s stance shifting dramatically depending on who occupies the White House.
