In a sharp break from his party’s stance, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has criticized fellow Democrats for their silence on violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants with criminal histories. His comments come in the wake of a high-profile murder case involving a Loyola University student in Chicago.

“How many Democrats are talking about that case? I think probably none,” Fetterman said, referring to charges against Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national accused of killing Sheridan Gorman last week. Authorities noted Medina-Medina had been previously arrested on unrelated charges but was released.

Fetterman expressed particular disappointment with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who recently threatened to arrest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. “Lighten up, Francis,” Fetterman quipped, quoting a line from the 1981 film “Stripes” to dismiss what he characterized as Krasner’s overstated threats.

The Pennsylvania senator has positioned himself as a moderate voice on immigration enforcement within the Democratic Party. “If you’re here in the country illegally already, and you’re breaking the law, like — ya gotta go,” he stated plainly.

Recent violent incidents have intensified the national debate over immigration enforcement policies. In addition to Gorman’s death in Chicago, the stabbing of Stephanie Minter in Virginia allegedly by Abdul Jalloh, a Sierra Leone native with 30 previous arrests, has fueled Republican calls for stricter handling of illegal immigrants with criminal records.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been vocal in its criticism of local jurisdictions that released both suspects before their alleged attacks. Regarding Gorman’s case, a DHS spokesperson stated: “She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he went on to commit this heinous murder.”

Similarly, DHS condemned Virginia authorities for Jalloh’s repeated releases before the fatal stabbing of Minter at a bus stop. The department called on Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and local officials to notify ICE before releasing such individuals in the future.

Fetterman highlighted his work across the aisle on such issues, noting his role as “the Democratic lead on Laken Riley,” referring to legislation passed in early 2025. The Laken Riley Act requires detention for non-citizens convicted of various crimes including burglary, theft, and shoplifting, and empowers state attorneys general to sue the federal government for failing to enforce these provisions.

The recent tragedies have underscored the ongoing tension between local “sanctuary” policies and federal immigration enforcement priorities. Sanctuary cities like Chicago limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, a practice critics argue allows dangerous individuals to remain in communities.

Fetterman’s stance represents a notable departure from many progressive Democrats who have generally advocated for less aggressive immigration enforcement. His comments reflect growing concerns about public safety in relation to immigration policy enforcement, particularly regarding individuals with criminal records.

“It should remind everybody how important ICE is for our security,” Fetterman concluded, emphasizing his belief in the necessity of proper immigration enforcement to maintain public safety.

The debate comes amid broader national discussions about immigration policy reform and enforcement priorities, with Republicans generally pushing for stricter measures while most Democrats have advocated for more lenient approaches that focus on humanitarian concerns.
