Federal prosecutors have launched an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for allegedly impeding law enforcement efforts, according to sources familiar with the probe. The investigation, still in its early stages, has not yet resulted in criminal charges, and additional details remain limited.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has indicated that the Democratic leaders’ anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rhetoric may constitute a federal crime. “When the governor or the mayor threaten our officers, when the mayor suggests that he’s encouraging citizens to call 911 when they see ICE officers, that is very close to a federal crime,” Blanche stated.

The investigation stems from tensions that erupted following the January 7 death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by a federal agent while allegedly interfering with an ICE operation in Minneapolis. The incident has sparked protests throughout the city and prompted strong responses from state and local officials.

Both Walz and Frey have denounced the investigation as politically motivated. Governor Walz took to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, claiming the probe represents an effort to “weaponize the justice system against your opponents,” which he characterized as “an authoritarian tactic.” Walz further noted that “the only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

Mayor Frey similarly dismissed the investigation as “an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, local law enforcement, and residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our city.” In a statement, Frey’s office affirmed, “America depends on leaders that use integrity and the rule of law as the guideposts for governance. Neither our city nor our country will succumb to this fear. We stand rock solid.”

The White House has pushed back against these assertions. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told reporters that Walz, Frey, and other Democratic leaders have “done nothing but turn up the temperature, smear heroic ICE officers, and incite violence against them—all in defense of criminal illegal aliens.”

The tensions escalated significantly when Governor Walz, during a statewide address, encouraged citizens to document ICE activities. “Help us establish a record of exactly what’s happening in our communities. You have an absolute right to peacefully film ICE agents as they conduct these activities,” Walz stated. “So, carry your phone with you at all times. And if you see these ICE agents in your neighborhood, take out that phone and hit record.”

Mayor Frey has also made controversial statements, including telling ICE to “get the f— out” of Minneapolis, though he later called for peace as protests intensified throughout the city.

The situation has drawn national attention, with President Donald Trump threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act if confrontations with federal agents continue. “If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The Insurrection Act, which allows the president to deploy military forces to suppress rebellions and enforce federal laws, has not been invoked since the 1992 Los Angeles riots. If implemented, it would permit National Guard deployment for domestic law enforcement purposes in Minnesota.

As tensions remain high in Minneapolis, the federal investigation into Walz and Frey marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between federal immigration authorities and state and local officials regarding immigration enforcement policies and practices.
