The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into nonprofit groups allegedly involved in organizing or funding political violence connected to Antifa, according to sources familiar with the matter. This joint effort between the FBI and IRS stems from directives issued by President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi to address what the administration characterizes as organized political violence.
The investigation follows a September presidential memorandum issued days after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk by an assailant who reportedly wrote antifascist phrases on bullet casings. In the memorandum, Trump stated, “These movements portray foundational American principles (e.g., support for law enforcement and border control) as ‘fascist’ to justify and encourage acts of violent revolution.”
The administration’s focus on Antifa comes amid a series of ideologically motivated attacks, including Kirk’s killing, an assault on a Dallas ICE facility that resulted in a detainee’s death, and the murder of a health insurance CEO. The DOJ recently secured convictions for nine members of what they described as a Texas Antifa cell involved in an attack on an ICE facility in Alvarado last year, which allegedly included weapons, explosives, and attempted murder.
Attorney General Bondi’s December 4 memorandum directed federal law enforcement to implement Trump’s directive, known as NSPM-7, by investigating Antifa’s funding sources and potential tax crimes by “extremist groups.” A spokesperson for the IRS Criminal Investigations unit confirmed the collaboration with the FBI, describing it as a “coordinated effort” in accordance with the presidential memorandum.
“IRS Criminal Investigation is collaborating with federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to investigate individuals and entities that may be funding domestic terrorism or political violence,” the IRS spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
Antifa, short for antifascist, encompasses individuals promoting various radical views often aligned with anarchism, communism, or socialism, according to the Congressional Research Center. Trump declared Antifa a “major terrorist organization” last year, a move that drew criticism from civil rights advocates who argued it targeted people based on political views rather than specific illegal actions.
Bondi’s memorandum carefully noted that the DOJ would not investigate “solely for the purpose of monitoring activities protected by the First Amendment,” attempting to address concerns about potential infringement on protected speech and assembly rights.
Sources familiar with the investigation indicated that the DOJ has directed every U.S. attorney across the country to designate a federal prosecutor as a “district coordinator” for these cases. Prosecutors are reportedly focusing on funding sources because the administration believes nonprofits could be coordinating and financing what they classify as domestic terrorism.
When asked for comment, a DOJ spokesperson emphasized the department’s broader commitment to addressing various domestic terrorism threats: “The Department of Justice is fully committed to preserving the rule of law, protecting law enforcement from coordinated attacks, ensuring everyone has the freedom to speak in the public square, participate freely in the electoral process, and practice their faith without fear of violence or harm, and bringing to justice the full range of criminal actors engaged in criminal conduct matching Congress’s definition of domestic terrorism.”
The investigation represents a significant escalation in the administration’s approach to what it considers domestic terrorist threats. Civil liberties organizations have expressed concerns about potential overreach and impact on First Amendment-protected activities, while supporters of the initiative argue it addresses genuine security concerns posed by violent extremism.
The FBI declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, which comes amid heightened political tensions and debates about the boundaries between legitimate protest and illegal violent activity.

Interesting development. If proven true, any groups funding political violence should be held accountable. However, we need to be cautious about unfounded claims and ensure due process. Transparency and proper investigation will be key to addressing this complex issue.

This is a complex and sensitive issue. I’m glad to see the DOJ investigating potential links between nonprofits and political violence, but they must be meticulous in their approach. Overreaching or making unfounded accusations could undermine legitimate civil society groups.
