In a highly contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday, former special counsel Jack Smith faced pointed questioning about his prosecutions of Donald Trump, with Committee Chair Jim Jordan immediately highlighting controversial aspects of the 2022 FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.

Jordan revealed that during the search, federal agents examined areas including the bedroom of Trump’s son Barron and former First Lady Melania Trump’s closet. The Ohio Republican cited testimony from Steven D’Antuono, former head of the FBI Washington field office, who reportedly told the committee that “none of the normal process, none of the normal protocol was followed in the investigation.”

According to Jordan, D’Antuono identified several procedural irregularities surrounding the raid. First, the operation was run out of the FBI’s Washington D.C. field office rather than the Miami office, which would typically have jurisdiction. Additionally, Jordan claimed that D’Antuono and others at the FBI had recommended notifying Trump before executing the search warrant or at minimum contacting the president’s legal team upon arrival, before beginning the search—recommendations that the Department of Justice allegedly rejected.

“On November 18th, 2022, three days after President Trump announces he’s running for president, Attorney General Garland names Jack Smith special counsel,” Jordan stated. “One of the first things Mr. Smith does is put on his team the very people responsible for the raid on President Trump’s home.”

The August 8, 2022, search of Trump’s Florida estate represented an unprecedented law enforcement action against a former president and sparked immediate controversy across the political spectrum. Critics questioned both the justification for the search and the methods employed by federal agents.

At the time, Trump vehemently denounced the raid, characterizing it as politically motivated. “The Biden administration invaded the home of their chief political opponent who is absolutely destroying him and everybody else in the polls,” Trump said during a September 2022 rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Trump further alleged that authorities had operated on “a phony pretext from a highly political magistrate” and had “trampled upon my rights and civil liberties as if our country that we love so much were a third world nation.” He specifically mentioned the search of Melania Trump’s closet drawers and “a deep and ugly search of the room of my sixteen-year-old son.”

The hearing marks Smith’s first public congressional testimony about his investigations into the former president, following a previous closed-door deposition. Smith was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022, days after Trump announced his 2024 presidential campaign.

The timing of Smith’s appointment has become a focal point for Republican lawmakers who have questioned whether the investigation was politically motivated to hamper Trump’s presidential ambitions. The special counsel has led two significant prosecutions against Trump—one regarding classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago and another concerning efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Democrats on the committee have defended Smith’s work as necessary and proper law enforcement, while Republicans have characterized the investigations as politically motivated overreach. The hearing represents another chapter in the ongoing political and legal battles surrounding Trump as the 2024 presidential race intensifies.

Smith’s appearance before the committee comes at a critical juncture as legal proceedings related to his prosecutions continue to unfold in courts across the country, with significant implications for both the justice system and the presidential campaign.
