The House Ethics Committee has launched a formal investigation into Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales over serious allegations, including having an affair with a staff member who later died by suicide.

The case took a tragic turn when Santos-Aviles, 35, died in September 2025 after setting herself on fire in her backyard in Uvalde, Texas. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently ruled her death a suicide.
