Newly disclosed U.S. government files on Jeffrey Epstein have triggered significant political fallout across the globe, with a top Slovakian official resigning and renewed pressure on former Prince Andrew to cooperate with American authorities.

The Justice Department began releasing millions of documents, videos and images related to Epstein investigations spanning two decades. Within a day of the disclosure, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accepted the resignation of his national security adviser, Miroslav Lajcak, after documents revealed meetings between Lajcak and Epstein following the financier’s release from jail.

Lajcak, who previously served as president of the U.N. General Assembly and as Slovakia’s foreign minister, maintained that his contacts with Epstein were part of his diplomatic responsibilities. However, mounting pressure from opposition parties and coalition partners made his position untenable.

In Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, should cooperate fully with U.S. authorities investigating Epstein’s activities. The former royal has thus far ignored requests from members of the U.S. House Oversight Committee for a “transcribed interview” about his long-standing friendship with the disgraced financier.

The massive document release includes email correspondence between Epstein and numerous high-profile figures including former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, and billionaires Bill Gates and Elon Musk. The files shed light on investigations that led to sex trafficking charges against Epstein in 2019 and against his confidant Ghislaine Maxwell in 2021.

One notable revelation includes details of a proposed indictment against Epstein and three of his personal assistants that prosecutors were preparing in May 2007. FBI investigation notes from that period describe an employee at Epstein’s Florida estate who told investigators about sending flowers to a high school student and preparing Epstein’s bedroom by fanning $100 bills on a table and placing a gun between mattresses.

Despite the evidence gathered, then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta—who later served as Labor Secretary under President Trump—ultimately allowed Epstein to avoid federal prosecution. Epstein instead pleaded guilty to a state charge of soliciting prostitution from someone under 18, receiving an 18-month jail sentence.

The documents contain numerous references to former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, though none of Epstein’s victims who have come forward have accused either man of wrongdoing. Both former presidents have stated they had no knowledge of Epstein’s abuse of underage girls.

Emails between Epstein and Mountbatten-Windsor reveal their close relationship, with one 2010 exchange showing Epstein apparently arranging a date for the former prince with a “26, russian, clevere beautiful, trustworthy” woman.

The Justice Department’s handling of the document release has drawn criticism from multiple quarters. A group of Epstein accusers issued a statement condemning the way the files were released, arguing they made it too easy to identify victims while failing to adequately expose those who might have been involved in criminal activity.

“As survivors, we should never be the ones named, scrutinized, and retraumatized while Epstein’s enablers continue to benefit from secrecy,” the statement read.

Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has pressed the Justice Department to provide lawmakers with unredacted versions of the files. Raskin emphasized that Congress must assess whether redactions were lawful or improperly shielded individuals from scrutiny.

Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in August 2019, a month after being indicted. Maxwell was later convicted of sex trafficking and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. While Mountbatten-Windsor denied having sexual encounters with Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused him of abuse beginning when she was 17, he eventually settled her lawsuit for an undisclosed sum. Giuffre died last year at age 41.

U.S. prosecutors never charged anyone else in connection with Epstein’s abuse, despite the financier’s extensive network of powerful connections and the evidence contained in the newly released files.
