U.S. Ramps Up Counterterrorism Monitoring Following Iran Strikes
American counterterrorism agencies have intensified surveillance of suspected sleeper cells within the United States following joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran. The heightened security measures come amid concerns about possible retaliatory attacks from Iran-backed operatives or sympathizers on U.S. soil.
Federal and local law enforcement have enhanced security presence in major American cities as a precautionary measure, despite no specific credible threats being publicly identified. The increased vigilance follows Saturday’s Operation Epic Fury, a coordinated U.S.-Israeli military campaign that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials.
Security experts warn that the ramifications of these strikes could extend beyond the Middle East and potentially affect domestic security in the United States.
“If ever there’s going to be a Hezbollah cell or a Hamas cell act in the United States in a violent way, it’s now,” said Chris Swecker, former assistant FBI director, in comments to Fox News. “Both organizations are Iranian-backed all the way. Both organizations have had a presence in the United States since the 1980s.”
Swecker noted that U.S. intelligence and law enforcement have long been aware of domestic networks and sympathizers affiliated with Iran-backed groups. “We know that they have cells here. We also know that there are lone sympathizers, many of whom have come out in these protest groups,” he added.
The former FBI official also expressed concerns about how recent border security policies may have exacerbated risks. “We just come off four years of open borders, and I have said before that that was an open door for terrorists to terrorist cells and terror sympathizers to infiltrate,” Swecker stated.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Saturday that counterterrorism and intelligence teams have been placed on high alert. “Last night, I instructed our Counterterrorism and intelligence teams to be on high alert and mobilize all assisting security assets needed,” Patel wrote on social media platform X.
Patel emphasized that while U.S. military forces are handling protection overseas, the FBI “remains at the forefront of deterring attacks here at home” and will continue working around the clock to protect Americans.
Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent and Fox News contributor, explained that such heightened monitoring is standard procedure when U.S. military operations involve adversaries known to respond through indirect or unconventional means.
“The intelligence and counterterrorism communities work on this kind of scenario continuously, long before any conflict begins,” Pack said. “When the United States commits to a joint military campaign with Israel, the domestic threat environment doesn’t simply remain static. It could shift, potentially significantly.”
He noted that groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas’s external networks, and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps proxies have historically demonstrated both intent and capability to retaliate against U.S. military actions through asymmetric means.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated she is “in direct coordination with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners as we continue to closely monitor and thwart any potential threats to the homeland.”
The elevated security posture comes at a challenging time, as parts of the Department of Homeland Security face a partial government shutdown, raising questions about resource availability and operational capabilities during this period of heightened vigilance.
Intelligence and security officials acknowledge that while no specific plots have been identified at this time, the threat landscape could evolve rapidly as international tensions develop. Security analysts continue to monitor whether the escalation overseas might eventually reach American soil.
Anti-war demonstrations have already emerged in several U.S. cities following the military action, with protesters gathering to voice opposition to the strikes. These public gatherings have prompted additional security measures as authorities work to maintain public safety while respecting First Amendment rights.
As the situation continues to develop, U.S. security agencies maintain that they are prepared to respond to any potential threats that may emerge as a consequence of the overseas military operations.
