The Justice Department has reportedly dismissed a complaint related to the Hope Florida controversy, a decision Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is celebrating as vindication against what he termed a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

According to The Floridian, the DOJ under President Donald Trump’s administration examined the controversy in late 2025 but determined there was “no predicate to open up an intake on this” and that “no further action is anticipated.” The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed this decision, and requests for comment remain unanswered.

“The witch hunt against the Hope Florida Foundation was orchestrated by left-wing media and their RINO allies,” DeSantis said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “As we’ve said from day one, all agency actions were appropriate and legally sound.”

The governor added, “The Hope Florida initiative continues to be the most successful conservative anti-poverty initiative of any state in the country.”

The controversy stemmed from a $67 million settlement between Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration and Centene, a major health insurance company specializing in government-sponsored healthcare programs like Medicaid and Medicare. The settlement resolved allegations that Centene had overbilled Medicaid.

After the settlement was finalized in September 2024, $10 million was directed to the Hope Florida Foundation. The foundation subsequently distributed this money as two $5 million grants to 501(c)(4) organizations: Save Our Society from Drugs and Secure Florida’s Future, Inc.

The controversy intensified when it was revealed that $8.5 million of these funds eventually reached Keep Florida Clean, a political action committee that campaigned against Florida Amendment 3. This ballot initiative sought to legalize recreational marijuana through a constitutional change—a measure First Lady Casey DeSantis had openly opposed.

Critics argued that settlement funds originating from a government action should never have been channeled into political campaigning activities. The discovery of this financial flow was initially made by Florida Republican State Representative Alex Andrade, who suggested that James Uthmeier, DeSantis’s then-chief of staff who later became attorney general, was allegedly responsible for orchestrating the movement of these funds.

Andrade had previously stated he didn’t “see how Casey or [Ron] DeSantis are involved” in the controversy.

The reported dismissal of the complaint by Trump’s DOJ represents another instance of improving relations between the president and Governor DeSantis, who were once fierce rivals during the Republican presidential primary. DeSantis suspended his campaign shortly before the New Hampshire primary, acknowledging he saw no viable path to victory.

The decision comes amid ongoing speculation about whether Casey DeSantis will enter the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race. U.S. Representative Byron Donalds has already declared his candidacy and secured President Trump’s endorsement. The filing deadline for Florida’s gubernatorial race is June 12, giving the First Lady limited time to make her decision.

The Hope Florida controversy highlighted tensions between government settlement funds and political activities, raising questions about appropriate boundaries for redirecting public money. For Governor DeSantis, the DOJ’s reported decision marks a significant political victory as he continues to position himself as a leading conservative figure on the national stage.

The situation also reflects the complex political dynamics within the Republican Party following the 2024 presidential race, with former competitors now finding common ground despite their previous rivalries. As Florida’s political landscape continues to evolve heading into the 2026 gubernatorial election, the resolution of this controversy removes one potential obstacle for the DeSantis family’s political future.
