Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche defended federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota on Sunday amid growing controversy over the deaths of two anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis.
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Blanche maintained that ICE agents are acting “humanely” despite criticism following the recent fatal shootings of protesters Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.
“Their jobs are very, very difficult,” Blanche told host Kristen Welker. “It is a very difficult place to be going out and trying to arrest these violent felons with no support from local law enforcement, with no support from the governor.”
The Deputy Attorney General emphasized that while critics focus on isolated incidents, the vast majority of operations have proceeded without issues. “There have been thousands of arrests in Minnesota, but people point to two or three things that are being wrong or being too aggressive or not being appropriate,” Blanche said. “That’s not fair to the men and women that are doing this every day.”
His comments come as investigations are just beginning into the death of Alex Pretti, who was killed during an encounter with federal agents. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Pretti was armed and “violently resisted” arrest, stating that a federal agent fired his weapon “fearing for his life.”
However, video footage of the incident appears to contradict some official claims. The footage shows an agent disarming Pretti shortly before he was killed. Pretti had initially become involved when trying to assist another protester who had been pushed by law enforcement.
On Sunday, a federal judge issued an order blocking the Trump administration from “destroying or altering evidence” related to the shooting, a significant development as investigations proceed.
Pretti’s parents have strongly disputed the government’s account of events. In an emotional statement, Michael and Susan Pretti described themselves as “heartbroken but also very angry” and condemned the official narrative as “sickening lies.”
“Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital,” the couple stated. “The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs.”
The parents maintain that video evidence shows their son holding a phone in one hand while his other empty hand was raised above his head as he attempted to protect a woman who had been pushed down by agents, all while being pepper-sprayed.
These fatal shootings have intensified tensions in Minneapolis, where local officials have taken an increasingly adversarial stance toward federal immigration operations. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Senator Amy Klobuchar have called for ICE to leave the city following the deadly incidents.
The confrontations in Minneapolis reflect broader national tensions over immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. Since returning to office, President Trump has implemented aggressive deportation policies and expanded ICE operations in cities across the country, including those previously designated as “sanctuary cities” that had limited cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Civil rights groups and immigration advocates have condemned the escalating enforcement tactics, while administration officials maintain they are necessary to address illegal immigration and public safety concerns.
As investigations continue, the deaths of Good and Pretti have become focal points in the heated national debate over immigration policy and the appropriate limits of federal enforcement actions, particularly in communities where local authorities are reluctant to cooperate with ICE operations.
