In a surprising political development, entrepreneur Jenny Rae Le Roux, the Republican cousin of Virginia’s Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger, has launched a campaign for Congress in California’s competitive 47th Congressional District. The announcement represents a notable family political divide as Le Roux aims to flip a Democratic seat in Orange County currently held by first-term Representative Dave Min.

“I’m running because I love this district,” Le Roux told reporters in her campaign launch. “I love California, and I don’t think that Dave Min has represented this district in a way that people are excited about.”

The Orange County district is among those being targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee as the GOP works to defend its narrow House majority in the 2026 midterm elections. Le Roux joins three other Republican candidates competing in the June 2 primary against Min, who succeeded former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter.

Le Roux’s criticisms of Min echo a common Republican campaign theme in swing districts, arguing that the incumbent campaigned as a moderate but governs from the left. “He presented as a moderate as he ran for Congress two years ago, but he is governing and messaging as a progressive,” she claimed. “A lot of my district is actually not that interested in progressive politics. They want schools that work, roads that operate, police that show up.”

Interestingly, Le Roux applies the same criticism to her cousin, Governor Spanberger, saying she “ran as a moderate in Virginia and is governing as a progressive, which I think is disenfranchising a lot of Democratic voters.”

Despite their political differences, Le Roux described a close family relationship with Spanberger. “Abby and I grew up together. We spent a lot of time in the summers at family pool parties together. We actually graduated the same year from the University of Virginia,” she explained. Le Roux added that they maintain family connections even as adults, with Spanberger having three daughters and Le Roux three sons.

The Republican candidate acknowledged that her cousin’s political career partly inspired her own civic engagement. “I’ve watched her bent toward public service, which is something that we both share. I think both of us grew up in a strong family with a love for community and a love for our country and a really strong sense of patriotism,” Le Roux said.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be the catalyst that fully activated Le Roux’s political ambitions. “I had a farm, a family and a business, and all of those came under attack during COVID,” she explained, criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the pandemic, particularly regarding school closures, homelessness, and crime.

This isn’t Le Roux’s first foray into California politics. She previously ran as a Republican in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and again in the regularly scheduled 2022 race, placing fourth in that primary. Currently, she serves as director of CAL DOGE, an initiative focused on government accountability launched by Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton and state controller candidate Herb Morgan.

Le Roux cites her work with CAL DOGE as directly influencing her congressional run. “Cal DOGE has been eye opening. Washington enables the same dysfunction and corruption that is hurting California,” she stated. “We can’t fix what is broken in our government unless outsiders who haven’t been part of the problem step up to serve.”

Transparency and fiscal conservatism form the backbone of her platform. “I think we need to have full transparency of where the money is going, who it is going to. I think that we have a unique opportunity to do that now with technology that wasn’t available in the past,” she explained.

The congressional race highlights the intensely personal nature of America’s political divisions, with Le Roux acknowledging the complicated family dynamics. “I love her… I congratulate her when she wins races. And I pray for her,” she said of Spanberger. “I believe that we should pray for all of our leaders, regardless of party, and I absolutely believe we should keep conversation lines open. But Abby and I don’t agree right now on much politically.”

“We’re in an interesting place as a family right now,” she added, underscoring how the nation’s political polarization often extends into family relationships.
