In a controversial development that has intensified an already heated congressional race in Iowa’s 3rd District, Democratic candidate Sarah Trone Garriott faces criticism for comments linking religious expression to political violence.

During a 2023 speech at a Methodist church, Trone Garriott, who is both a state legislator and Lutheran minister, expressed concern about public displays of religion, stating: “We have seen religion and political violence showing up more and more in our public spaces. It’s something that is just very in our faces and something that we’re very concerned about, and something that feels very threatening right now at this time.”

The remarks have surfaced as Trone Garriott challenges incumbent Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, who is seeking his third term in what political analysts at the Cook Political Report consider a “toss-up” race. The southwestern Iowa district represents a critical battleground in the upcoming November elections.

While acknowledging it was “a good thing to talk about religion and politics together” and speaking positively about living out one’s faith in community settings, Trone Garriott repeatedly voiced discomfort with public Christian displays. She specifically mentioned finding imagery from the Pledge of Allegiance containing the phrase “one nation under God” among several “pretty uncomfortable ways that faith and political power have collided.”

The Democratic candidate also referenced Christian symbols displayed at rallies for former President Donald Trump and during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as examples of concerning religious expression.

“This is not a Christian nation. It’s a nation for all of us,” Trone Garriott told church congregants. “Spaces and proceedings need to be for all people, and we need to work on reminding folks of that.”

Trone Garriott’s speech extended beyond religious concerns to criticize parental rights in education and private Christian schools, suggesting these movements were rooted in racist opposition to school integration. She characterized such initiatives as attempts to create “White enclaves” for children.

The candidate, who opposed legislation keeping transgender athletes out of women’s sports while serving in the state Senate, also criticized gender-related bills, stating they were “couched in the language of there’s a threat against women and White men are responsible to protect women from threats.”

Rep. Nunn responded forcefully to the resurfaced comments, telling Fox News Digital: “I was raised around Iowans who go to church every week and show up for their neighbors. Sarah Trone Garriott can’t walk into a church without delivering a lecture about how their faith is threatening and their schools are racist.” He added, “She’s made it clear that the values Iowa families live by every single day are the ones she’s running against.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee defended Trone Garriott, with spokesperson Katie Smith emphasizing her background as “a mom and minister who has served her community as a hospital chaplain and a parish pastor.” Smith added that “public display of her faith has been a guiding force in Sarah’s life and continues to be to this day,” while noting that Trone Garriott “has always condemned political violence however it rears its ugly head and will always work to bring Iowans together.”

The controversy highlights the complex intersection of religion and politics in American public life, particularly in heartland states where faith communities play significant roles in social and political landscapes. It also reflects broader national tensions over religious expression, political violence, and issues related to education and transgender rights.

Trone Garriott’s campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the resurfaced speech, which comes at a critical juncture as both campaigns prepare for the final months before the November election in a district that could help determine control of the House of Representatives.
