Latin Grammy Winner and Congressional Candidate Bobby Pulido Faces Scrutiny Over Mexican Ties
Latin Grammy Award winner Bobby Pulido, who recently secured the Democratic nomination for Texas’ 15th Congressional District, is facing increased scrutiny over comments suggesting he spends significant time in Mexico while pursuing a seat in Congress.
In a 2023 interview, Pulido described himself as a “winter Texan,” saying, “It gets hot here, bro. Like real hot — like real hot. I’m a summer Mexican.” He added that “winter Texan” sounded better, comments he now claims were made in jest.
These remarks contrast with statements Pulido made to NBC News earlier this month, where he disputed accusations about not living consistently in the district he hopes to represent. “I live in Texas. We’ve always lived in Texas. Since COVID, really — that’s just not true,” he said.
Pulido, a celebrated Tejano music artist known for hits like “Desvelado” and “Se Murió de Amor,” has deep connections to Mexico that extend beyond his performances. According to sources familiar with his situation, his wife currently resides in Mexico, as do children from previous marriages. He also owns property there.
In 2015, Pulido told El Norte, a Mexican newspaper, that he was considering dual citizenship, stating, “I’m going to be Mexican because I want the same Mexican passport you have.” His campaign has confirmed that he currently holds only American citizenship.
His musical career regularly takes him south of the border, with his tour website showing that his five most recent concerts were all in Mexico. In a 2025 interview, Pulido mentioned that he and his wife travel to Mexico frequently, adding that he has experienced healthcare in both countries.
“We live on the border. My wife and I have a house in Mexico. So, we travel there, and we spend time over there. And I’ve had a pretty unique perspective of experiencing healthcare over there and healthcare here,” he explained.
The residency questions add to a growing list of controversies surrounding Pulido’s candidacy. Last fall, shortly after announcing his bid, he drew criticism for a history of posting links to explicit websites on his personal X account. He also faced backlash over a social media post that appeared to show him urinating on President Donald Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
Pulido’s past includes numerous vulgar attacks against Trump, including posts with profanity-laden insults and the Spanish translation of explicit language. Despite these controversies, he successfully captured the Democratic nomination and will challenge Republican incumbent Rep. Monica De La Cruz this November.
De La Cruz, a two-term representative, recently mocked Pulido on social media, suggesting he “only belongs at quinceañeras,” referring to traditional coming-of-age celebrations in Latin culture. Pulido responded with “Don’t threaten me with a good time,” and his campaign reported that he received nearly 1,000 invitations to quinceañeras in the district after asking to attend local celebrations.
The race for Texas’ 15th Congressional District is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country. Pulido’s campaign emphasizes that there’s “nothing wrong with people having ties to family and heritage across borders,” as they attempt to navigate questions about his international connections while establishing his credentials as a serious congressional candidate.
Pulido’s cross-border lifestyle highlights the complex realities of life in the Texas borderlands, where cultural, economic, and family ties often span both nations, creating unique political dynamics in a district where such connections are common among many residents.
