Longtime Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn announced Thursday that he will seek an 18th term in Congress, defying the growing trend of older lawmakers stepping away from Capitol Hill amid calls for generational change within the party.

“In a few minutes, I am going to sign the paperwork that’s necessary in order to qualify for the Democratic nomination to run again,” the 85-year-old South Carolina congressman said during an event in Columbia.

Clyburn’s decision comes at a time when the Democratic Party has been grappling with questions about age and leadership. This was highlighted most dramatically when President Joe Biden, 81, dropped his re-election bid following intense scrutiny of his physical and mental capabilities.

Unlike several of his contemporaries in House Democratic leadership, Clyburn has opted to stay in the political arena. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 85, and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, 86, both announced they would not seek re-election, planning to retire at the end of 2026. The three had served together in Democratic leadership for nearly two decades, with Clyburn holding the third-ranking position.

Addressing inevitable questions about his age, Clyburn made light of the issue, saying he will soon “celebrate the 47th anniversary of my 39th birthday.” He added with confidence: “If I were not up to it, I would not do it. My health has been good.”

While nearly a dozen House Democrats in their 70s and 80s have announced retirement plans effective at the end of the current Congress, Clyburn is not alone in his decision to continue serving. The chamber’s oldest members – Republican Rep. Hal Rogers of Kentucky, 88, and Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California, 87 – are both seeking re-election as well.

Clyburn’s influence extends far beyond his congressional district. As one of the nation’s most prominent Black political leaders, he has long been considered a kingmaker in South Carolina Democratic politics. His power on the national stage was clearly demonstrated during the 2020 presidential primary season.

South Carolina has held a pivotal position in presidential politics for nearly half a century as the first southern primary state. This prominence has allowed Clyburn to wield significant influence in the Democratic presidential nomination process. Most notably, his endorsement of Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 South Carolina primary helped propel the then-former vice president to a decisive victory, revitalizing his campaign after poor showings in earlier states.

That win became the turning point for Biden’s primary campaign, launching him toward the Democratic nomination and eventually the presidency. Political analysts widely credit Clyburn’s backing as a crucial factor in Biden’s resurgence, particularly in mobilizing Black voters who form a substantial portion of South Carolina’s Democratic electorate.

First elected to the House in 1992, Clyburn represents South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, which includes portions of Charleston and Columbia, along with rural areas in the central and southern parts of the state. Throughout his career, he has been a strong advocate for civil rights, economic opportunities for marginalized communities, and healthcare access.

If re-elected, Clyburn would begin his 18th term in January 2025 at age 86, continuing a congressional career that has spanned more than three decades. While he stepped down from formal House leadership positions, Clyburn remains an influential voice within the Democratic caucus and a close ally to many in Washington.

As Democrats navigate this period of transition and generational change, Clyburn’s decision underscores the complex balance the party faces between honoring experienced leadership and fostering new voices in Congress.
