In the wake of another fatal shooting in Minneapolis involving federal immigration agents, former President Bill Clinton has issued a strong condemnation of what he describes as “increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics” by federal agents.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti, who was shot by Border Patrol agents while recording federal immigration operations. Pretti, an ICU nurse, appeared to be attempting to assist a woman who had been knocked down by agents when he was sprayed with an irritant, pushed to the ground, and beaten. Video footage shows an agent pulling Pretti’s gun from his waistband before other agents fired several shots, killing him.

This shooting follows closely on the heels of another ICE-involved death in Minneapolis earlier this month, when Renee Nicole Good was killed, further inflaming tensions in a city that has become a flashpoint for law enforcement controversies in recent years.

“In recent weeks, we’ve watched horrible scenes play out in Minneapolis and other communities that I never thought would take place in America,” Clinton said in his statement. “People, including children, have been seized from their homes, workplaces, and the street by masked federal agents.”

The former president specifically highlighted the treatment of civilians attempting to document law enforcement actions. “Peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional right to observe and document law enforcement have been arrested, beaten, teargassed, and most searingly, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot and killed,” he continued.

Clinton’s criticism extended to the administration’s response to these incidents, suggesting a pattern of obfuscation and resistance to accountability. “To make matters even worse, at every turn, the people in charge have lied to us, told us not to believe what we’ve seen with our own eyes, and pushed increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics, including impeding investigations by local authorities,” he said.

The Minneapolis incidents have sparked outrage across the political spectrum, with former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama also issuing statements calling for accountability following the shootings.

The recent escalation in immigration enforcement tactics comes amid heightened political tensions over border security and immigration policy. Federal immigration operations have intensified across the country, with critics arguing that enforcement methods have become increasingly militarized and less transparent.

Civil liberties groups have raised concerns about constitutional violations, particularly regarding Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures, as well as First Amendment rights to document government activities in public spaces.

Clinton framed the current moment as historically significant for American democracy. “Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come,” he stated. “This is one of them. If we give our freedoms away after 250 years, we might never get them back.”

The former president concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in the face of what he perceives as government overreach. “It is up to all of us who believe in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that our nation still belongs to We the People.”

Local authorities in Minneapolis have called for cooperation from federal agencies in investigating both recent shootings, but reports suggest tensions between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials regarding jurisdiction and transparency in the aftermath of these incidents.
