Former President Bill Clinton announced on Friday that he has provided a sworn statement to the House Oversight Committee regarding his knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, as both he and Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify under subpoena pressure from congressional Republicans.

“I have called for the full release of the Epstein files. I have provided a sworn statement of what I know,” Clinton stated on X, formerly Twitter. “And just this week, I’ve agreed to appear in person before the committee. But it’s still not enough for Republicans on the House Oversight Committee.”

The former president’s statement comes amid escalating tensions between the Clintons and House Republicans, who had threatened contempt proceedings when it initially appeared the couple might not comply with subpoenas to testify in the investigation into Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Republican lawmakers have accused the Clintons of “requesting special treatment” in negotiations over their testimony. After the Clintons’ attorneys sent a letter to the committee indicating they would comply under certain conditions, Democratic Ranking Member Robert Garcia characterized it as full compliance with the committee’s demands.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer disputed this characterization, telling Fox News Digital that the agreement lacked specificity. “The Clintons’ counsel has said they agree to terms, but those terms lack clarity yet again, and they have provided no dates for their depositions,” Comer said. “The only reason they have said they agree to terms is because the House has moved forward with contempt.”

The Clintons’ apparent change of position led the House to temporarily pause contempt proceedings on Monday night. However, disagreements persist over the format of the testimony, with Bill Clinton criticizing Comer’s approach to the proceedings.

“Now, Chairman Comer says he wants cameras, but only behind closed doors,” Clinton wrote. “Who benefits from this arrangement? It’s not Epstein’s victims, who deserve justice. Not the public, who deserve the truth. It serves only partisan interests. This is not fact-finding, it’s pure politics.”

Democrats on the committee have pointed out that Comer has not pushed for contempt proceedings against other individuals who declined to appear before the committee. They have also highlighted that Comer has not taken similar action against the Department of Justice for failing to produce all requested documents related to Epstein by a deadline agreed to by Congress late last year. According to committee Democrats, the DOJ has produced only a fraction of the expected documents.

The investigation into Epstein has taken on heightened political significance as Republicans continue to explore connections between the deceased financier and prominent political figures. Epstein, who had connections to numerous high-profile individuals across business and politics, died in 2019 while in federal custody awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide.

Recently released Epstein files included images of Clinton, intensifying public interest in the former president’s relationship with the convicted sex offender. Clinton has previously acknowledged traveling on Epstein’s private jet but has denied knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.

The congressional investigation has expanded to potentially include other prominent figures, with lawmakers reportedly considering subpoenas for additional witnesses, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who also had connections to Epstein.

The controversy reflects the continuing public demand for accountability regarding Epstein’s crimes and the lingering questions about how he maintained relationships with powerful figures despite his criminal history. For victims of Epstein’s abuse, the congressional investigation represents one of the few remaining avenues for seeking answers and potential justice after Epstein’s death effectively ended criminal proceedings against him.
