A Chicago physical education teacher at Gary Elementary School has been placed on administrative leave following controversy over a social media post in which he expressed support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The incident has sparked outrage in West Chicago’s predominantly Hispanic community, with calls for the teacher’s dismissal.

The controversy began when the teacher posted “GO ICE” on his personal Facebook account last week. The comment quickly circulated throughout the community, drawing sharp criticism from local residents and activists who found the message insensitive and inappropriate given the demographics of the school.

“Imagine working as a teacher in an elementary school in West Chicago where the Latino community is highly populated and promoting ICE,” one social media user wrote in response to the post. Others used stronger language to condemn the teacher’s statement.

Community organizers launched a Change.org petition calling for the teacher’s termination, arguing that “the casual way in which he publicly promoted the actions of ICE in our area is inappropriate and unsuitable for an educator.” The petition also encouraged students to stay home from school in protest, suggesting that keeping the teacher employed would “disrupt the emotional welfare and therefore, the education of our students.”

Illinois State Senator Karina Villa, who represents the 25th District where the school is located, issued a statement expressing “unwavering solidarity” with families upset by the “disturbing comments reportedly made by an educator.” Villa acknowledged that freedom of speech is protected but emphasized that “as educators we have the responsibility to our students and their families to create a safe and welcoming environment for all.”

The situation took a complicated turn when the teacher initially submitted his resignation on Friday before the district could begin an investigation, but then withdrew it before the school board could take action. This allowed him to return to work on Monday, according to an email sent to parents by District Superintendent Kristina Davis.

In response to growing community concern, the city of West Chicago held a “listening session” on Monday that included a Spanish translator. During this meeting, several parents expressed their concerns about the post. One parent said that “kids do not feel safe” as a result of the comment, while another described the post as “cruel.”

Following a meeting with district administration on Monday, the teacher was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. A district spokesperson confirmed this development in a statement, adding that the employee “will not be permitted on any District property while on leave.”

“We understand that this situation has raised concerns and caused disruption for students, families, and staff,” the statement continued. “We want to ensure our schools are safe spaces, and we look forward to seeing all students back in school tomorrow.”

The controversy highlights the tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in communities with significant immigrant populations. West Chicago, located in DuPage County about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, has a substantial Hispanic community that has expressed particular sensitivity to pro-ICE sentiment, especially from educators responsible for teaching their children.

When Fox News Digital reached out to the district for clarification on which policies the teacher may have violated by posting support for ICE on his personal Facebook account, the spokesperson did not provide specific information about potential policy infractions.

The incident occurs amid ongoing national debates about the role of social media in professional settings and the boundaries between educators’ personal expression and their professional responsibilities, particularly in diverse communities where immigration enforcement remains a divisive and emotionally charged issue.

This seems like a complex situation without easy answers. On one hand, teachers have a right to their personal views. On the other, their position of authority means they must be cautious about how those views are expressed, especially on sensitive topics. Hopefully, the school can find a balanced approach.

  3. This is a delicate situation. While everyone has the right to free speech, teachers must be mindful that their words and actions can have a significant impact, especially on impressionable young minds. Maintaining professionalism and neutrality is crucial.
