Federal immigration agents detained an employee of a Chicago day care center Wednesday morning during child drop-off hours, igniting controversy and distress among parents and staff members.

The incident occurred at Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center on Chicago’s north side around 7 a.m. According to witnesses, the woman, who is from Colombia, ran from a vehicle into the facility after officers pulled into the parking lot. Alderman Matt Martin said the employee was detained at the entry while telling authorities she had documentation.

Federal authorities offered a different account of the events. Tricia McLaughlin, a Homeland Security spokesperson, denied that the day care was specifically targeted, claiming that the driver of a vehicle transporting the woman ignored law enforcement sirens and emergency lights when authorities attempted to pull them over.

“They ran into a daycare and attempted to barricade themselves inside the day care — recklessly endangering the children inside,” McLaughlin said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that the woman entered the United States illegally in June 2023 and obtained work authorization under the Biden administration. Her teenage children, aged 16 and 17, crossed the border illegally last month near El Paso, Texas, and were brought to a government shelter for unaccompanied migrant children in Chicago.

Several officers at the scene wore clothing identifying them as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, with at least one wearing a vest marked “ICE,” according to video footage and witness accounts.

Parents who witnessed the detention expressed shock and dismay. Esmeralda Rosales, whose husband had just dropped off their 9-month-old child, rushed from work after learning of the incident.

“These are the nicest, kindest people. They don’t deserve, these children don’t deserve to be living through this,” Rosales said, identifying the detained woman as her child’s teacher.

Chris Widen, whose 4-month-old is also taught by the detained employee, criticized the timing of the operation, noting it occurred “at the school during the busiest time of drop-off where kids and families have to witness a teacher being forcibly removed and agents kitted up in tactical gear.”

The incident is part of “Operation Midway Blitz,” an aggressive immigration enforcement campaign that has resulted in more than 3,000 arrests in the Chicago area since early September. The operation has included unusual tactics such as rappelling from helicopters during apartment raids and deploying overwhelming force in public areas.

Following the detention, the school closed for the day, leaving parents gathered outside looking angered and concerned. Adam Gonzalez, a parent who recorded the detention, emphasized the importance of documenting such events: “The world needs to see what’s happening, that this is not fake, that this is real.”

Immigration authorities have faced increasing criticism in recent months for conducting operations near schools during busy hours. Similar incidents have occurred near educational facilities in Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles. In Chicago last month, agents released tear gas that affected children playing on an elementary school playground.

Rayito de Sol, which operates eight locations across Illinois and Minnesota, did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
