A progressive Chicago lawmaker issued an apology Tuesday after facing intense public criticism for suggesting that a slain college student had been in the “wrong place at the wrong time” when she was murdered.

Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old freshman from Westchester County, New York, was fatally shot last Thursday while taking a walk with friends along Chicago’s lakefront around 1:30 a.m. The Loyola University Chicago student was just months away from completing her first year of college when her life was cut short.

Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden, a progressive ally of Mayor Brandon Johnson, sparked outrage following comments she made during an interview with Fox 32 Chicago. In the interview, Hadden suggested that Gorman was in the “wrong place at the wrong time” and may have “startled” the individual who shot and killed her.

The remarks drew immediate backlash on social media platforms, with many critics calling her comments insensitive and inappropriate. The controversy grew as conservative media outlets amplified the story, further fueling public indignation.

Hadden released a statement Tuesday addressing the controversy, explaining that her interview “gone viral on conservative media” and that her comments were made in response to a question comparing Gorman’s murder to a separate case from 2018.

“In an effort to make sense of a senseless situation, I said things that landed wrong with some people,” Hadden wrote. “My comments were never intended to blame the victim or to imply that Sheridan should not have been out enjoying the park or that it was her fault that she was shot.”

The alderwoman maintained that she was trying to share limited information with the community while addressing fears about the shooting. “I sincerely apologize for any additional pain that my comments may have caused,” she added.

Hadden also criticized media outlets for “intentionally creating sound bites to misconstrue my words during this tragedy,” calling the practice “unfortunate.”

Gorman’s family issued their own statement that appeared to reference Hadden’s remarks, rejecting any minimization of their daughter’s death.

“What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to the idea of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the family wrote. “This is not an abstraction. This is the loss of a daughter. The loss of a sister. The loss of a future filled with milestones that will now never come. Our family is forever changed.”

The family’s statement further emphasized the need to resist becoming desensitized to violence. “We cannot accept a world where moments like this become something people grow used to. We cannot allow ourselves to become desensitized to violence. When we begin to accept these tragedies as inevitable, we all become vulnerable to them. Apathy is not harmless—it allows these moments to repeat.”

Police have arrested Jose Medina-Medina, 25, and charged him with Gorman’s murder. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Medina-Medina is a Venezuelan national who entered the United States illegally during the Biden administration. After being apprehended at the border, he was subsequently released into the country pending further immigration proceedings, a practice critics have called “catch and release.”

DHS officials confirmed that Medina-Medina had a previous arrest record in Chicago for shoplifting before allegedly committing this murder.

The case has intensified national debate about immigration policies, with some Republican lawmakers pointing to Gorman’s death as evidence of failures in the current system. It comes amid a surge in migration at the U.S. southern border and increasing tensions between federal and local governments over how to manage the influx of migrants to urban centers like Chicago.

Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois recently addressed the case, criticizing attempts to “politicize” the tragedy while expressing condolences to Gorman’s family.

Unfortunate that this incident has become politicized. The alderwoman should have chosen her words more carefully, but knee-jerk outrage isn’t constructive either. Let’s hope the investigation provides clarity.

This is a heartbreaking situation. The alderwoman’s comments were misguided, but the real tragedy is the loss of a young life. My condolences to the victim’s family and friends.

While the alderwoman’s remarks were insensitive, I hope the family receives the support they need during this tragedy. Politicizing a young person’s death is disrespectful.

Tragic that this incident has become a political football. The alderwoman’s remarks were clumsy, but the priority should be supporting the victim’s family, not partisan bickering.

This is a tragic loss of life. While the alderwoman’s comments were ill-advised, we should focus on honoring the victim and supporting the family during this difficult time.
