In a heated Georgia gubernatorial race, Republican contenders are vying fiercely for President Donald Trump’s support, with contradicting financial records raising questions about one candidate’s political loyalties.

Two leading Republican candidates, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and healthcare entrepreneur Rick Jackson, have made Trump allegiance central to their campaigns. Jones, who has secured Trump’s endorsement, declares on his campaign website: “This Primary Election is very simple. There is one authentic conservative who has fought for President Trump.” Meanwhile, Jackson has boldly claimed he would “be Trump’s favorite governor” after donating $1 million to Trump’s political action committee, MAGA Inc., shortly before entering the race last month.

However, a review of Federal Election Commission filings reveals Jackson’s financial support has previously flowed to numerous Trump rivals. During the 2024 presidential primaries, Jackson donated at least $150,000 to Nikki Haley’s campaign and $100,000 to Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign while both were competing against Trump.

The contributions came through Jackson Investment Group, an entity Jackson has controlled for decades according to SEC filings. The group made three separate donations totaling at least $140,000 to Haley’s SFA Fund between 2023 and early 2024, including a $40,000 contribution just weeks before Haley suspended her campaign. Jackson personally donated an additional $10,000 to Team Stand for America, Haley’s joint fundraising committee.

Jackson’s $100,000 donation to Ramaswamy’s super PAC occurred in July 2023, several months before Ramaswamy ended his presidential bid in January 2024.

His pattern of backing Trump opponents extends well beyond the recent election cycle. Over the past decade, Jackson has financially supported former Rep. Liz Cheney, former Sen. Mitt Romney, and contributed over $1 million to Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign against Trump. The $2,700 donation to Cheney’s leadership PAC came shortly after she voted to impeach Trump following the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

Jackson, who founded Jackson Healthcare and has committed at least $50 million of his personal fortune to his gubernatorial campaign, has disrupted what many political observers expected to be a relatively settled primary race between Trump-endorsed Jones, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and state Attorney General Chris Carr.

When confronted about his history of supporting Trump rivals, Jackson has deflected, comparing himself to former Trump critics who later joined the president’s inner circle, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

The Jackson campaign has attempted to shift focus to his opponent, with spokesperson Dave Abrams telling Fox News Digital: “Self-dealing Burt Jones is recycling old attacks to distract from his failing campaign. From shielding doctors who perform sex change surgeries on minors to protecting Chinese vape manufacturers for campaign cash and family profit, the more Georgians learn about Burt Jones, the more they realize he operates like the kingpin of the Atlanta political mob.”

Jones’s campaign vigorously disputes these characterizations. Spokesperson Kayla Lott defended Jones’s position on vaping legislation as promoting free-market solutions rather than protecting Chinese manufacturers, and pointed to Jones’s support for legislation preventing minors from obtaining gender-affirming surgeries or treatments.

“Never Trumper Rick Jackson bankrolled candidates running against President Trump and the America First agenda,” Lott stated. “Now he’s lying to voters to try and cover it up. As the only Trump-endorsed candidate in this race, Lt. Governor Burt Jones will always stand up for Georgians and stand with our President.”

A former senior Trump White House official was even more direct, telling Fox News Digital: “To be clear, President Trump endorsed Burt Jones for Governor. Rick Jackson claiming he is Trump’s ‘favorite’ is downright dishonest.”

The primary election, scheduled for May 19, will determine which Republican advances to the general election in November. With two months remaining in the primary campaign, the battle for Trump’s blessing—and voters’ perception of that blessing—continues to dominate Georgia’s gubernatorial race.
