An armed man drove into the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s Florida resort, before being fatally shot by law enforcement early Sunday morning, according to U.S. Secret Service officials.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when the man, identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina, entered the property near the north gate as another vehicle was exiting. Martin was armed with a shotgun and carrying a gas can when confronted by authorities.
“He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with them. At which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw explained during a press conference. Two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy “fired their weapons to neutralize the threat.”
Investigators revealed that Martin had been reported missing by his family days earlier. Evidence suggests he traveled south from North Carolina, acquiring the shotgun along the way. A box for the weapon was later discovered in his vehicle.
The FBI has requested that residents living near Mar-a-Lago review their security cameras for footage that might assist with the investigation. Authorities are still working to establish a motive and determine whether Martin was previously known to law enforcement.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were not at the property during the incident, as they were staying at the White House for the weekend. Mar-a-Lago, the former president’s private club and residence in Palm Beach, has been the site of previous security concerns.
The breach represents the latest in a troubling series of security threats against the former president, who has survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign.
Just last month, Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of attempting to assassinate Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club. In that incident, a Secret Service agent spotted Routh aiming a rifle through shrubbery before Trump came into view. When Routh aimed his weapon at the agent, the agent fired, causing Routh to flee and eventually be captured.
Trump also survived another assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman fired eight shots before being killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
The Mar-a-Lago breach comes amid a disturbing uptick in political violence across the United States. Recent incidents include the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the killing of a Democratic leader in the Minnesota state House and her husband, the shooting of another Minnesota lawmaker and his spouse, and an arson attack at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence.
Just five days before the Mar-a-Lago incident, authorities arrested a Georgia man armed with a shotgun who was running toward the west side of the U.S. Capitol.
The White House has referred all questions about the Mar-a-Lago security breach to the Secret Service and FBI, which are leading the ongoing investigation into Martin’s background, motives, and how he managed to breach the initial security perimeter of the heavily guarded property.
Security protocols at Mar-a-Lago have been enhanced since Trump’s presidency, but the facility presents unique challenges as it functions as both a private club and a presidential residence, requiring a delicate balance between security measures and operational functionality.
