Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Nationwide Anti-ICE Protest While Keeping Office Open

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pledged her “full support” for a nationwide anti-ICE protest scheduled for Friday, while clarifying that her congressional office will remain operational to continue handling critical constituent services.

The protest, branded as the “National Shutdown,” calls for “no school, no work and no shopping” as demonstrators demand an end to what organizers describe as “ICE’s reign of terror.” The campaign gained momentum following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis amid intensified federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota.

“The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country — to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN,” the organizers stated on their official website, urging Americans across the country to participate in the day of action.

Despite her support for the protest’s objectives, Ocasio-Cortez explained via Instagram that her office would continue its operations, citing crucial responsibilities to constituents. “Full disclosure — my office handles crucial casework and immigration cases for the community. We will be open tomorrow to continue community support and defend immigrant families,” the New York Democrat wrote.

The congresswoman, a vocal critic of aggressive immigration enforcement tactics, added that she offers her “full support for national mobilizations, general strikes, and mass movement work” while maintaining essential services for her district.

The National Shutdown campaign was sparked by two recent fatal incidents in Minneapolis. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Department of Veterans Affairs ICU nurse, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents on January 24 while recording federal immigration enforcement operations. Earlier that month, on January 7, Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, who reportedly fired in self-defense after Good allegedly used her Honda Pilot SUV in a threatening manner, according to Department of Homeland Security accounts.

Protest organizers have framed these incidents as evidence of excessive force and systemic problems within immigration enforcement agencies. Their online campaign asserts that ICE and Border Patrol agents “are going into our communities to kidnap our neighbors and sow fear,” and that “it is time for us to all stand up together in a nationwide shutdown and say enough is enough.”

The momentum for these protests has been building throughout January. Just one day before Pretti’s death, thousands of demonstrators participated in an “ICE Out of MN: Day of Truth and Freedom” march through downtown Minneapolis, demanding a halt to federal immigration enforcement actions in the state.

The controversy surrounding immigration enforcement has also reached Capitol Hill, where some Senate Democrats have threatened to block Department of Homeland Security funding in response to the Minnesota incidents. This development has added a federal legislative dimension to what began as local protests.

The planned National Shutdown represents a significant escalation in anti-ICE activism, expanding from regional demonstrations to a coordinated nationwide effort. It also highlights the tension between protest movements and practical governance, as illustrated by Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to maintain office operations while supporting the broader cause.

As Friday approaches, communities across the country are preparing for potential disruptions, while federal immigration authorities remain under intense scrutiny from both protesters and lawmakers critical of current enforcement practices.
