The U.S. Air Force is implementing a complete overhaul of the presidential aircraft fleet’s iconic appearance, adopting President Donald Trump’s preferred color scheme of red, white and dark blue with gold accents. This change marks the first major redesign of the presidential aircraft livery in more than six decades, according to Air Force officials.

“The Air Force is implementing a new paint scheme requirement (red, white and dark blue) for VC-25B as well as the additional executive airlift fleet, which will include the new 747-8i and four C-32 aircraft,” an Air Force spokesperson confirmed in a statement.

The redesign will replace the instantly recognizable robin’s egg blue and white exterior that has served as a global symbol of the American presidency since the Kennedy administration in the early 1960s. The new color palette bears a striking resemblance to Trump’s personal Boeing 757, commonly referred to as “Trump Force One,” which features a dark navy fuselage with a bold red stripe.

President Trump has been vocal about his preference for the new design. “We’re painting it red, white and blue like the American flag, which is incredible,” he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview last summer.

The color scheme change applies to multiple aircraft in the presidential and executive fleet, including two Boeing VC-25B jets currently being converted to serve as the next generation of Air Force One. The update will also extend to a Boeing 747-8i recently donated by Qatar and four C-32 aircraft, which transport high-priority personnel such as the first lady and cabinet officials. When carrying the vice president, these C-32s operate under the call sign Air Force Two.

Work on the fleet transformation is already underway. The first C-32 aircraft has completed the repainting process and is expected to be delivered to the Air Force within the next few months. The Qatar-donated 747-8i is undergoing refurbishment and should be ready for presidential use by this summer, according to reports from CBS News.

This redesign represents the culmination of efforts that began during Trump’s first term, when he unveiled a model aircraft reflecting his preferred palette. That version was later canceled for the VC-25B program during the Biden administration, but has now been reinstated as an official requirement across the executive fleet.

The historical significance of this change cannot be overstated. The familiar light blue and white design has been an immediately recognizable symbol of American power and diplomacy for generations. First introduced during President John F. Kennedy’s administration, it became one of the most iconic aviation designs in the world, instantly signaling the presence of the American president on the global stage.

Boeing continues work on the next generation of Air Force One aircraft under a contract signed in 2018. The repainting effort is proceeding alongside broader upgrades to the presidential air fleet, which will include advanced communications, defensive systems, and interior configurations designed for the unique needs of the commander-in-chief.

Contractor L3Harris is handling the upgrades for the C-32 aircraft at its facility in Greenville, Texas. These specialized Boeing 757s serve as critical transportation for senior government officials and as backup aircraft for the president when necessary.

The new design, with its navy blue body, red accents, and gold stripe, represents a significant visual departure from decades of presidential aircraft tradition. As these freshly painted aircraft begin entering service in the coming months, they will present a dramatically different image of American executive power to observers around the world.

The White House has directed inquiries about the redesign to the U.S. Air Force, which is overseeing the implementation of the new presidential aircraft appearance requirements.

Updating the look of Air Force One is a significant decision. The aircraft serves as a powerful symbol of the presidency, so I can understand the desire to refresh its appearance. However, the traditional colors have become so iconic over the decades.

Interesting to see the presidential aircraft getting a new design. I wonder how the public will react to the change from the iconic Kennedy-era scheme. Will it be seen as a modern update or a controversial departure from tradition?

    • The red, white and blue color scheme does seem to align with President Trump’s personal style. It will be interesting to see if the public embraces the new look.

This is a bold move by the Air Force. The classic blue and white scheme has become a global symbol of American leadership. I’m curious to see how this new design is received both at home and abroad.

  4. The new red, white and blue design certainly has a more modern, aggressive feel compared to the softer Kennedy-era colors. It will be interesting to see if this change is viewed as an improvement or as an unnecessary departure from tradition.

  5. While the Kennedy-era paint job is historic, it’s understandable that a new administration would want to put their own stamp on Air Force One. The new design has a patriotic feel, though some may view it as too closely resembling the President’s private jet.
