Despite U.S. Claims of Victory, Iran Retains Military Capabilities After Ceasefire

Since the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, Trump administration officials have been quick to declare Iranian military and arms capacity largely neutralized after weeks of conflict. However, beneath the triumphant rhetoric lies a more nuanced reality about Tehran’s remaining capabilities.

Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reported this week that U.S. forces have struck more than 13,000 targets across Iran. He cited impressive percentages of destruction to Iran’s air defenses, navy, and weapons factories, painting a picture of overwhelming American success.

Yet these statistics fall short of President Trump’s assertion that Iran’s military capabilities have been “decimated.” Independent data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project, which tracks conflicts globally, shows Iranian strikes continued at a relatively steady pace from the war’s beginning on February 28 through Wednesday, contradicting claims of Iran’s complete military collapse.

A closer examination of U.S. officials’ statements reveals significant gaps in the narrative. While Gen. Caine claimed approximately 80% of Iran’s air defense systems were destroyed, with more than 1,500 air defense targets, 450 ballistic missile storage facilities, and 800 drone storage facilities hit, questions remain about the remaining 20%.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth initially claimed Iran “no longer has an air defense” and that the U.S. “owns their skies,” but later qualified his statement, admitting Iran “can still shoot” and may “have a system here or there.” Neither official elaborated on what remains of Iran’s air defense capabilities or which regions retain defensive systems.

The persistent threat from Iran’s remaining defenses was underscored by the recent downing of a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle, the first American military jet shot down during the conflict. President Trump attributed the loss to a “handheld shoulder missile, heat-seeking missile,” demonstrating Iran’s continued ability to strike back despite U.S. assertions of dominance.

Naval capabilities present a similar picture of incomplete destruction. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declared Iran’s navy “completely annihilated,” with Gen. Caine noting 150 Iranian ships are now “at the bottom of the ocean.” However, he acknowledged that only half of the Revolutionary Guard’s small attack boats—vessels used to harass ships in the critical Strait of Hormuz—have been destroyed.

The U.S. also claims to have eliminated more than 95% of Iran’s naval mines after 700 strikes. Yet without disclosure of the pre-war stockpile size, the significance of the remaining 5% is unclear. Iranian semi-official news agencies recently published information suggesting the Revolutionary Guard deployed sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict, likely as leverage ahead of negotiations between Iran, Israel, and the United States scheduled this weekend in Pakistan.

Regarding Iran’s military industrial complex, Gen. Caine stated U.S. forces attacked “approximately 90% of their weapons factories” and hit “nearly 80% of Iran’s nuclear industrial base,” claiming this has degraded Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. However, he stopped short of confirming these facilities were permanently destroyed or rendered unusable.

President Trump himself acknowledged Iran’s potential to rebuild or acquire weapons through other channels, issuing a warning that “a Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately.”

Meanwhile, Israel reports over 90% effectiveness in intercepting Iranian drones and missiles through its sophisticated aerial defense systems. These systems, developed over decades, can detect incoming fire and deploy only when projectiles target population centers or critical infrastructure. While Israeli officials acknowledge the system isn’t foolproof, they credit it with preventing significant damage and casualties.

As negotiations begin, the reality of Iran’s remaining military capabilities will likely play a crucial role in shaping the terms and stability of the ceasefire agreement, regardless of the administration’s public declarations of victory.
