Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Addresses Minneapolis Border Patrol Shooting, Game Postponement

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke candidly on Sunday about the Border Patrol-involved shooting in Minneapolis that led to the postponement of their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, expressing deep concern about the incident and its impact on the community.

The fatal shooting occurred Saturday in south Minneapolis during a Department of Homeland Security operation. The victim, later identified as Alex J. Pretti, was shot and killed after allegedly confronting federal officers. This marked the second shooting involving federal officers in Minneapolis in January, intensifying tensions in a city that has seen significant civil unrest in recent years.

Kerr, known for his outspoken views on social issues, expressed particular concern about media coverage of such incidents and the resulting societal division.

“My concern as an American, we’re not perfect. We’ve never been perfect. But I think our ideals have been in the right place for a long time,” Kerr said when asked about a path forward for the country. He emphasized the importance of constitutional values and citizenship that prioritize looking after one another.

The coach pointed to what he sees as a troubling trend in American discourse: “We’re being divided by media for profit, by misinformation. There’s so much out there that is really difficult for all of us to reconcile.”

Kerr highlighted the challenge of determining truth in today’s media environment, noting how people can watch the same video footage and draw completely opposite conclusions. “It is a confusing time to be alive and to be an American,” he said, appealing to citizens to remember constitutional values and their implications for how people treat each other.

The Warriors coach also expressed his affection for Minneapolis, describing it as “a great stop on the NBA tour” and praising the city’s residents. “The people here are wonderful and it’s very sad what’s happening. I feel for the city. There’s a pall that’s been cast over the city. You can feel it. A lot of people are suffering,” Kerr remarked.

He emphasized that the loss of life remains the primary concern, noting poignantly that “when all the unrest settles down, whenever that is, those family members won’t be returning home and that’s devastating.”

Kerr revealed he had discussions with Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch about postponing the game and agreed with the decision. The game was rescheduled and played on Sunday.

The Minneapolis incident follows another controversial shooting weeks earlier when a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good. According to DHS, Good was shot in self-defense after allegedly using her SUV in a threatening manner while attempting to block federal vehicles. Kerr characterized Good’s death as a “murder,” though official investigations are ongoing.

The coach’s comments reflect the complex intersection of sports, politics, and social issues that has become increasingly common in professional athletics. For Minneapolis, these incidents add to the city’s complicated recent history with law enforcement, following the 2020 killing of George Floyd that sparked nationwide protests.

As the Warriors and Timberwolves returned to the court Sunday, Kerr’s reflections underscored the reality that for many in the community, basketball was secondary to the ongoing search for healing and justice in a divided time.
