Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Apologizes for Comments on Porziņģis’ Health Condition

Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, issued a public apology on Saturday after making comments that appeared to question the medical condition of newly acquired center Kristaps Porziņģis.

The controversy began when Kerr addressed Porziņģis’ health status during an interview with 95.7 The Game. Porziņģis, who joined the Warriors at the NBA trade deadline in a deal with the Atlanta Hawks, had missed three consecutive games due to what the team described as an illness.

During the radio appearance, Kerr suggested that Porziņģis’ previously disclosed postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) diagnosis might not be accurate. “When I heard about the trade, I read about the POTS diagnosis and I called [Hawks GM] Onsi [Saleh]… and said, ‘Is this POTS story real?’ And he said, ‘It’s actually not POTS,'” Kerr stated. “That was some misinformation that was out there.”

Porziņģis had revealed his POTS diagnosis while playing with the Boston Celtics during last season’s playoffs. POTS is a blood circulation disorder that causes a range of symptoms when a person stands up, including rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, and fatigue. While not life-threatening, it can significantly impact an athlete’s performance and recovery.

Realizing his error, Kerr walked back his comments before Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers. “It was a stupid mistake by me to talk about something that I’m not qualified to talk about,” Kerr admitted to reporters. “I regretted even trying to discuss the diagnosis. That was my mistake. I need to leave that to professionals.”

When pressed for details about Porziņģis’ current condition, Kerr deferred to medical expertise. “It’s a medical issue way behind my capabilities of explaining anything,” he said. “He’s sick, he won’t play, we’ll keep monitoring.”

The 7-foot Latvian center has had a frustrating start to his tenure with the Warriors. Since joining the team over three weeks ago, Porziņģis has appeared in just one game. He initially missed time due to an Achilles injury he was dealing with at the time of the trade, delaying his Warriors debut until February 19. The undisclosed illness has kept him sidelined for the three games that followed.

Porziņģis was again unavailable for Saturday’s contest against the Lakers, which resulted in a lopsided 129-101 defeat for Golden State. However, there appears to be progress in his recovery, as Kerr noted that Porziņģis participated in practice on Friday and might be available for Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The situation highlights the delicate nature of discussing player health matters, particularly with complex conditions like POTS that may not be widely understood in sports circles. It also underscores the challenges the Warriors face as they attempt to integrate a key acquisition during a crucial stretch of the season.

Porziņģis, when healthy, provides the Warriors with a unique combination of size, shooting, and rim protection that could significantly bolster their frontcourt. His absence has coincided with Golden State’s inconsistent performance as the team battles for playoff positioning in the competitive Western Conference.

As the regular season enters its final weeks, the Warriors will be hoping for Porziņģis’ swift return to help strengthen their roster for a potential playoff push.
