In an unprecedented move to counter what they see as growing vaccine misinformation and politicization, leading vaccine scientists and medical authorities announced today the formation of the Vaccine Integrity Project (VIP). The initiative aims to provide science-based responses to potentially unfounded government decisions regarding vaccines.
Spearheaded by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, the project has secured initial funding of $240,000 from philanthropist Christy Walton through her Alumbra Foundation. The effort will be guided by prominent health leaders including former National Academy of Medicine President Harvey Fineberg and former FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, who will co-chair the steering committee.
“This project acknowledges the unfortunate reality that the system that we’ve relied on to make vaccine recommendations and to review safety and effectiveness data faces threats,” said Michael Osterholm, epidemiologist and director of CIDRAP, who is leading the initiative.
The launch comes amid growing public health concerns. The United States is currently experiencing its largest measles outbreak since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000, with 800 cases across 23 states and two child fatalities. Meanwhile, pertussis (whooping cough) cases have more than doubled compared to last year, exceeding 8,000 nationwide.
Fineberg expressed particular concern about what he characterized as the lack of forceful response from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to the ongoing measles outbreak. “We are trying to ensure that the best science continues to guide decisions about vaccines,” Fineberg stated.
The Trump administration appears resistant to the initiative. Andrew Nixon, an HHS spokesperson, dismissed the project as “a self-appointed echo chamber masquerading as oversight” and claimed it was “less about integrity and more about salvaging the credibility of a public health bureaucracy that failed millions during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The project emerges against a backdrop of declining kindergarten vaccination rates nationwide and widespread vaccine misinformation. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found most American adults have encountered false claims about the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, including debunked assertions linking it to autism.
Lawmakers in Minnesota recently introduced legislation declaring mRNA vaccines “weapons of mass destruction” and criminalizing their manufacture. In Texas, a group affiliated with Kennedy has claimed without evidence that the measles outbreak was caused by a bioweapon.
Beginning next month, the VIP steering committee will convene experts from industry, academia, public health, and professional organizations to establish the project’s scope, membership criteria, and protocols for action. The initiative may review government decisions and messaging about vaccines and potentially establish an independent body to evaluate vaccine safety and effectiveness.
While the project cannot replace the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which advises the CDC on vaccine recommendations that health insurers must cover by law, Fineberg noted concerns about potential scenarios where a reconstituted ACIP might reject scientifically validated vaccines.
Yale University vaccine policy specialist Jason Schwartz, not affiliated with the project, welcomed its formation: “It’s important to get such a group up and running and be ready to respond to whatever may come down the line with vaccines. Because I think we would be kidding ourselves to think there will not continue to be more changes, more threats, more weakening of the federal government’s stewardship of our national vaccination efforts in the months and years to come.”
The Vaccine Integrity Project represents a significant mobilization of the scientific and medical community to preserve evidence-based vaccine policy amid increasing political pressures and public skepticism that threatens decades of progress in preventing infectious diseases.

As an investor in mining and energy, I’m curious to see if this VIP initiative touches on any vaccine-related issues for workers in those industries. Workplace safety and public health are so interconnected.
Good point. Vaccine policies can definitely impact mining, energy, and other industrial sectors. This project could provide valuable guidance for those industries as well.
$240,000 in initial funding from the Alumbra Foundation is a good start, but I wonder if more resources will be needed to truly counter the scale of misinformation out there. This is an important battle for public health.
You raise a fair point. Combating misinformation requires sustained effort and adequate funding. Hopefully this project can attract more support over time to fulfill its mission effectively.
It’s concerning to hear that the vaccine recommendation system itself is facing threats. I hope the VIP can reinforce the independence and integrity of that process. Relying on sound science is critical, especially for something as essential as public vaccination.
Interesting development. Vaccine misinformation has become a real public health issue, so I’m glad to see experts coming together to provide science-based responses. Transparency and public trust in the vaccine approval process is critical.
Agreed. Having respected leaders like Fineberg and Hamburg involved lends credibility to this initiative.
The scale of the current measles outbreak in the US underscores the need for this project. Restoring confidence in vaccine safety and effectiveness is crucial to public health. I hope the VIP can effectively counter misinformation and political agendas.
Me too. Vaccines save lives, and we need robust, independent oversight to maintain that public trust.
As someone with a background in the mining and energy sectors, I’m encouraged to see experts taking a stand against vaccine misinformation. Protecting worker and community health is vital for those industries. Kudos to the VIP for this initiative.
