U.S. election security remains robust despite ongoing misinformation, according to county officials and voting rights advocates. At a recent League of Women Voters meeting in La Plata County, County Clerk Tiffany Lee addressed concerns by emphasizing the strength of local election integrity measures.

Election officials across the country continue to battle against a tide of unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud and systemic vulnerabilities. Despite numerous court rulings and independent investigations finding no evidence of widespread election fraud, misinformation persists in public discourse.

“For decades, states have built robust systems that allow only eligible citizens to vote and ensure that votes are counted accurately and securely,” noted the League of Women Voters of La Plata’s board of directors in a recent statement.

Election security experts point to multiple layers of protection that safeguard the American voting system. Nearly 98% of U.S. voters now use paper ballot systems, according to research from the Brennan Center based on data from Verified Voting. These paper ballots provide a physical record that can be manually audited after elections to confirm electronic tallies.

Voting equipment undergoes extensive certification and testing before deployment. Elections are also conducted with bipartisan oversight at polling locations, and results undergo post-election audits in many jurisdictions to verify accuracy.

Despite these safeguards, federal agencies have sometimes amplified concerns about noncitizen voting. The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, now used in some states to check citizenship status of voters, has come under scrutiny from election administration experts. The nonpartisan Institute for Responsive Government has highlighted that SAVE relies on potentially outdated or incomplete immigration data, which could lead to legitimate voters being incorrectly flagged.

Some officials have attempted to restrict mail-in voting or decertify voting machines despite court rulings confirming the security of these practices. Election workers have also faced increased scrutiny and intimidation, creating additional challenges for local election administration.

Voting rights advocates emphasize that actual cases of voter fraud remain extremely rare. When irregularities do occur, they typically result from administrative errors or voter confusion rather than coordinated attempts to manipulate results. Such isolated incidents occur at rates far too low to affect election outcomes.

The U.S. election system operates primarily under state and local authority, with limited federal involvement. Recent executive orders that have attempted to interfere with established election procedures have faced legal challenges. The Brennan Center noted that one recent executive order sought to decertify all voting machines nationwide—an action beyond presidential authority that courts are now reviewing.

While each state maintains different procedures, they have collectively strengthened security measures in recent years. These include implementing intrusion detection systems, maintaining backup voter records, and conducting rigorous testing of all voting systems.

Election officials and democracy advocates recommend that voters remain informed and engaged to counter misinformation. Courts continue to serve as a critical bulwark against unfounded challenges to election results, while state officials need proper resources and legal protection to resist external pressure or intimidation.

“Choosing our leaders is the cornerstone of American democracy, and by participating – no matter your viewpoint – Americans help keep our election system fair and trustworthy,” the League’s board emphasized.

Decades of experience with American elections demonstrate that the system, while not perfect, effectively represents voters’ choices. The distributed nature of election administration—with thousands of local jurisdictions each responsible for their own procedures—provides natural security against widespread manipulation.
