In his latest critique of NATO, former President Donald Trump has once again repeated a significant historical inaccuracy about the military alliance, claiming that NATO allies “never came to our rescue” despite clear evidence to the contrary.

Speaking at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump described NATO as a “paper tiger” and asserted, “We’ll come to their rescue but they will never come to ours.” This statement directly contradicts the alliance’s response following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

In the aftermath of 9/11, NATO invoked Article 5 of its founding treaty for the first and only time in its history. Article 5 establishes the principle of collective defense, requiring all member states to assist any NATO member under attack. This activation led to NATO allies joining the United States in Afghanistan, where they fought alongside American troops for nearly two decades.

The military alliance contributed significantly to the war in Afghanistan, with NATO countries deploying tens of thousands of troops. By the end of the mission, over 1,100 service members from NATO countries other than the United States had lost their lives in the conflict.

Trump’s comments follow similar remarks he made in January that sparked international backlash when he suggested NATO forces had “stayed a little back, a little off the frontlines” during the Afghanistan war. Those statements drew sharp criticism from international leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called Trump’s characterization “insulting and frankly appalling” and urged him to apologize.

The former president also criticized NATO for not sending warships to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping traffic, an expectation that misrepresents NATO’s fundamental purpose. NATO was established as a defensive alliance aimed at protecting member states from external aggression, not as an interventionist force for international maritime security operations outside its defined operational scope.

“We’re very disappointed with NATO because NATO has done absolutely nothing,” Trump claimed during the cabinet meeting. He continued his critique by suggesting that NATO allies only want to help “when the other side is annihilated” and that they said “we want to get involved when the war’s over,” adding, “No, you’re supposed to get involved when the war’s beginning, or even before it begins.”

Trump’s persistent criticism of NATO has been a consistent theme throughout his political career. His skepticism of multilateral alliances reflects his “America First” approach to foreign policy, which has emphasized bilateral relationships and questioned the value of long-standing international partnerships and security arrangements.

These latest comments come amid ongoing tensions within the alliance about defense spending commitments among member states, a legitimate concern that Trump has highlighted throughout his presidency. NATO guidelines stipulate that member countries should spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense, a threshold that many European allies have struggled to meet until recent years.

However, experts note that the former president’s repeated mischaracterization of NATO’s historical response to the 9/11 attacks undermines legitimate policy discussions about the future of the alliance and burden-sharing among members.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise globally, particularly with Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine and China’s growing assertiveness, the role and unity of NATO remain critical components of Western security strategy. The alliance currently faces some of its most significant challenges since the Cold War, making accurate understanding of its purpose, history, and capabilities particularly important in policy discussions.
