Misinformation: The Modern Pathogen Threatening Our Mental Ecosystem
In a recent political cartoon for The Washington Post, Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Ramirez depicted three scientists in a medical lab, with one ominously declaring, “It’s the most dangerous pathogen we have come across.” When asked if it was bubonic plague or smallpox, the answer comes: “Misinformation and conspiracy theories.”
The comparison is more apt than it might initially appear. Information functions as a fundamental nutrient for the brain, similar to how our lungs require oxygen. When that information is corrupted, it disrupts brain function across all levels – from molecular processes to observable behaviors.
The effects can be subtle yet profound. Just as a millisecond delay in nerve impulses can cause a jogger to lose balance and fall, exposure to misinformation can lead voters to make decisions based on falsehoods. More disturbingly, misinformation increasingly undermines our most basic perceptions of reality.
Human brains evolved to form strong connections between seeing and believing. This adaptive trait helped our ancestors survive – if you thought you saw a predator, it was safer to assume it was actually there. But this same tendency now creates vulnerability when confronting sophisticated misinformation, particularly that generated by artificial intelligence.
AI systems can now create convincing falsehoods at unprecedented scale and speed. This capability poses particular danger when deployed against established scientific consensus, as seen when former President Trump described global warming as a “con job” during a United Nations address. Such high-profile misinformation can potentially set back climate action efforts by decades as these false beliefs become encoded in millions of minds, generating political resistance to acknowledging the actual risks.
The real-world impacts of misinformation spread became painfully evident in December 2025 following the killing of two Brown University students. Within days, a Palestinian student was incorrectly identified as a suspect online, leading to approximately 5,000 postings and 130,000 reposts across the internet. Despite his innocence, he endured what he later described as an “unimaginable nightmare” of death threats and hate speech until the actual attacker was identified five days later.
Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, points to social media’s fundamental business model as a key driver of such incidents: “The business model of social media rewards those whose content spreads widely, encouraging more sensational or provocative content. We’re no longer in control of our information ecosystem.”
The threat extends beyond distorting our understanding of the present. AI can now effectively rewrite history by altering photos or creating entirely fictional characters that appear to have existed in specific historical contexts. George Orwell presciently anticipated this capability in his novel “1984,” where the fictional “Comrade Ogilvy” was brought into existence through “a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs.”
Today’s advanced AI systems, particularly those like Sora 2, can effortlessly generate not just convincing photos but detailed biographical information about people who never existed. This capacity to alter perceptions of the past has profound implications, as Orwell noted: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
When information becomes corrupted, whether accidentally or deliberately, our collective ability to address critical 21st-century challenges is severely compromised. From global warming and emerging diseases to the ethical development of artificial intelligence and concerns about surveillance, none of these complex problems can be effectively addressed without reliable information as a foundation.
Most alarmingly, as misinformation continues to proliferate, essential cognitive processes themselves – reasoning, managing reliable information, and reaching valid conclusions – face increasing peril.
It is no exaggeration to suggest that misinformation, by undermining the accuracy and reliability of our thought processes, threatens our very survival as thinking, reasoning beings. In a world where seeing can no longer be equated with believing, our minds require new defenses against this modern pathogen.
