Students increasingly rely on AI for schoolwork, but many lack the skills to identify false information, according to a new report from Oxford University Press (OUP).

The study, which surveyed over 2,000 teenagers aged 13 to 18, revealed that approximately 80 percent of students are now using artificial intelligence tools to complete homework assignments or for revision purposes. Many students treat AI as a digital tutor, turning to it for immediate assistance with academic challenges.

However, the research highlighted a concerning trend: a significant number of these students are copying AI-generated content without properly verifying its accuracy or reliability. This practice raises questions about information literacy in the digital age, as young people increasingly navigate a complex information landscape.

“The challenge extends beyond just the students,” said Dan Williams, an assistant headteacher quoted in the report. Williams noted that even educators sometimes find it difficult to distinguish between human-created and AI-generated content, particularly when it appears in video format. This suggests the issue of AI-generated misinformation affects the entire educational ecosystem.

The growing integration of AI in education reflects broader technological trends reshaping learning environments worldwide. As generative AI tools like ChatGPT have become more accessible, students have quickly adopted them for various academic purposes, from drafting essays to solving complex problems.

Despite the concerns about misinformation, the OUP report found that students generally maintain a positive attitude toward AI technology. An overwhelming 90 percent of respondents reported benefiting from AI use in their studies, with notable improvements in creative writing, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills.

These findings come at a time when educational institutions are grappling with how to adapt to the rapid advancement of AI technology. Schools face the dual challenge of harnessing AI’s potential benefits while addressing its limitations and risks.

In response to these challenges, Oxford University Press has launched an AI and Education Hub. This resource aims to support teachers in developing greater confidence and competence with AI technology, helping them guide students toward more responsible and effective use.

The UK’s Department for Education has also taken steps to address the changing landscape by releasing guidelines on the safe implementation of AI in classroom settings. These guidelines likely reflect growing recognition among education authorities that AI is becoming an integral part of modern learning environments.

Education experts suggest that schools should focus on developing students’ critical evaluation skills rather than attempting to ban AI tools outright. By teaching young people how to assess the reliability of information—regardless of its source—educators can better prepare them for a world where distinguishing fact from fiction is increasingly challenging.

The findings also highlight the evolving nature of plagiarism and academic integrity in the AI era. Traditional definitions of original work and proper citation are being challenged as students incorporate AI-generated content into their assignments.

This trend mirrors developments in higher education and professional settings, where organizations are developing new policies around AI use. Some institutions are focusing on teaching students to properly attribute AI assistance, while others emphasize the importance of human oversight in the creative process.

The OUP report suggests that rather than viewing AI as either a threat or a panacea, educators should work toward developing frameworks that maximize its benefits while minimizing potential harms.
